This is the first and only publication about urban India that blends food, art, and labour in Dharavi--the largest informal settlement in India and a microcosm of modern Asia. Eight chapters showcasing eight Dharavi home cooks, most of them housewives, reveal life-stories and recipes that resound with the lively accents of Dharavi's cultural hotpot. This cookbook-cum-culture studies text presents a colourful parade of unfamiliar Indian recipes and probes their unique culinary history, while exploring why and how women cook, and what food means to them beyond its life in a meal. Published by Dharavi Biennale and Prajna Desai, in association with the Mumbai non-profit SNEHA and Wellcome Trust (UK). This is a bilingual book in English and Hindi.
