Publishers Text

Whether you are interested in how real people used to live, or just looking for a good meal, vintage cookbooks are fascinating to read. Not only can they help us better use produce from farmers’ markets, but they provide a link to the world of our mothers and grandmothers. And because they’re handwritten, the women who created them feel closer to us, as if dictating favorite recipes in their own voices. Now in her nineties, Margaret (Peg) Vedder Rau started out cooking on a wood-fired cookstove and today prints out recipes from the internet. This book brings together three generations of heirloom recipes from Pleasant View Farm, the author's home since 1943. It includes carefully scanned reproductions of an 1891 cookbook written in a mother’s elegant hand and the more tentative efforts of her daughters. The second half of the book is a curated collection of recipe cards, written by Peg Rau from 1943 through 2000. It features recipes captured as she worked with her mother-in-law, recipes from dear friends, and other favorites from cookbooks, the back of cake boxes, or the internet. Also included is a collection of bulk recipes for salads and side dishes created by Peg for her family deli, Turkeyland. This book was created to preserve and share these keepsake recipes with family and friends.
