Basic barbecue rub from How To Grill: The Complete Illustrated Book of Barbecue Techniques, A Barbecue! Bible Cookbook by Steven Raichlen

Where’s the full recipe - why can I only see the ingredients?

Always check the publication for a full list of ingredients. An Eat Your Books index lists the main ingredients and does not include 'store-cupboard ingredients' (salt, pepper, oil, flour, etc.) - unless called for in significant quantity.

Notes about this recipe

This is my go-to rub for barbecuing pork. The rub has a nice balance between sweet and spicy, but due to the high sugar content, care is needed not to burn the meat. The substitution of chipotle chili powder for cayenne pepper adds a smokiness to the rub and cuts back on the heat. I omit the celery seeds and it is still a good basic barbecue rub.
