    Cake layers can be baked 1 day ahead. Chill frosting 30 minutes before icing cake. Cake can be made 1 day ahead.

    I love the combination of orange and spice flavors in this cake. Texture is tender and moist with a medium-weight crumb. Works great with the cream cheese frosting. The freshness of the ground cardamom has a big influence on cake's flavor - when it's really fresh, I like to dial it back from the 1 tsp specified in the recipe, otherwise it overwhelms the orange flavors. When it's older and less intense, 1 tsp works well. I've successfully baked this as a 9x13-inch sheet cake though I've found it's important to use room temperature ingredients for that size - if the ingredients are too cool, the cake ends up being overly moist in the center relative to the edges.
