Hi folks, I've got a nice 4 day weekend coming up and it's getting cooler in the southern hemisphere, so I thought it was a good chance to get out the slow cooker and stock the freezer with some ready made meals for the coming weeks. I would love your suggestions on what to make. What's your favourite slow cooker recipe?

I use mine for most bean recipes and frequently for stews ... when my Dad was in his 90's and on his own for cooking for a few weeks, I taught him to make stew in a slow cooker. He hadn't made stew since his depression era college days. Somehow he thought the slow cooker was an improvement.

I mostly use my slow cooker for pot roasts, stews, and chilis (a variation on stews).

The slow cooker I received for Christmas in 2008 was a catalyst for developing my interest in cooking, because I didn't know what to do with it. I then purchased one of my first cookbooks, which is still my favorite slow-cooker cookbook: The gourmet slow cooker: one pot meals from around the world by Lynn Alley.

I have 3 slow cookers - small, regular and large. I'm in Canada, where our cold season last months. I haven't used them as much since getting an Instant Pot, but there's nothing like coming home to the smell of dinner in the slow cooker. Or in the summer when it's too hot to use the oven and stove. My faves are chicken curries, soups and chowders (I used to do an amazing loaded potato soup with bacon and cheese), chili (beef or turkey), ribs (which I precook in the slow cooker and finish on the barbie or grill), and spaghetti sauce (which is so great for a crowd...teens and their friends, weekend guests, coming home after skiing with the gang). But my favourite thing is to throw a bunch of apples, cored, peeled (or not) and cut up into big pieces, into my small crockpot with some cinnamon. Cooked on high or low it makes fabulous applesauce. Just stir...it mushes up while cooking. I never add sweetener, but you could if apples are too tart. Great for wrinkly apples no one wants to eat! Perfect side for a pork loin roast, that I also may do in the crock pot. Also...mulled apple cider/wine. Enjoy your colder season. Our snow will finally be gone this weekend!

Thanks for sharing everyone. So far I've made https://www.eatyourbooks...mb-shank-and-barley-soup (just like grandma used to make) and https://www.eatyourbooks...mexican-shredded-chicken using the Byron Bay Chilli Company green jalapeno chilli sauce with coriander and a tin of tomatoes. Went very nicely last night in a quesadilla with guacamole.
