After revisiting some tried-and-true recipes during this lockdown i'm on a retro kick. The recipe I'm hoping to make calls for seasoned flour, and that's a new one on me.

The seasoned-flour recipes I'm finding on the Net all have overwhelmingly  long lists of ingredients, and I'm not going out looking for all of them. I have flour and seasoned salt. Might I just combine the two?

In our family we use a seasoned flour for white fish. It was given to us from a family friend.
Here it is
1 Cup Flour
1 Tbsp Salt
1/2 Tbsp Pepper
1 Tbsp Dry mustard
2 Tbsp Paprika
1 Tbsp Garlic powder
1 1/2 Tbsp Accent
1/2 tsp Ginger
1/4 tsp Thyme
1/4 tsp Basil
1/4 tsp Oregano

I leave out the accent which is msg, and also omit anything I don't have around.
I would think salt and pepper would be the minimum plus any of the above you have already.
Hope that's helpful.

Thank you, eliza.

When I say retro I mean retro. The recipe I hope to try is from an old cookbook, a hand-me-down from a coworker. It has no publication or copyright date that I can find, but I'll bet you a gelatin salad it's from the 50's.

When I accepted the book I accepted the challenge of finding something appetizing in it.

My guess is that at the time you could buy seasoned flour in the supèmarket, or that every housewife knew how to make it.

I just add freshly ground salt and pepper to flour and mix it well!  Maybe I lack imagination!?!

I would say salt, pepper and paprika at a minimum would approximate the seasoned flour of yore. You might also add onion powder and/or garlic powder, depending on the recipe you are using it for.

Well, I just mixed some seasoned flour for a stew I'm making: about 1/4 cup AP flour, 1 Tbsp Jane's Krazy Mixed-Up Salt, about 1/4 tsp homemade celery salt, and a few grinds freshly ground black pepper. Now I'm cutting up the potatoes.

I'll see how it works.

If it's an old '50s cookbook from the UK it would just be plain flour, table salt and white pepper ;-) Seemples !

Found some seasoned flour in the supermarket this week, right next to the breadcrumbs. Didn't take it down to check the ingredients, but there it was.

I use black pepper unless it's going to show but yes, that's all it is in any cookbook I've ever seen that gave instructions.
