Hi,

I'm thinking of making this recipe soon, and was curious what the rest of you think of the following instruction.. It calls for 3 cans of lentils, and 3 cans of tomatoes and he uses the following sentence:

  1. Stir in the tomato purée and balsamic, then tip in the lentils, juice and all. Add the
tomatoes, then fill each tin with water, swirl around and pour into the pan.

If you read this, would you fill the 3 empty tomatoe cans with water and add them, or include the lentil cans aswell to make it a total of 6 cans of water?

I know i can just start cooking and make a guess after 3 cans of water to add more or not, but i'm also curious how you would interpret it..

The whole recipe has been published online and can be found here: https://www.tefal.com.au/blogs/recipes/a-better-bolognese

I read that as just using the tomato cans for water (ie not the lentil cans).

It still seems like a lot but it is a large batch of sauce (serves 14!?!) with lots of veg AND he adds a rack of ribs to the sauce to cook so maybe that's the key.

Don’t know if this helps, but I watch his YouTube channel a lot and he typically rinses out tomato cans with a small amount of water…ie about 1/3 cup I guess. Maybe try that and see how it looks?

Thanks for the suggestions, 3 half full cans of water it will be :)

It cooks for 2 hours - my guess would be the 3 cans full of water, but to keep a eye on it to make sure it doesn't need more.

I think he means to rinse the lentil tins. Including the juice from canned beans, called aquafaba. That's free, starchy, thickening agent.

I think he means fill all 6 empty cans about half full with water , twirl, and put that into the sauce.  There is another bolognese recipe in his site with that direction.  You may  need to add more water though.
