I'm thinking of buying an ice cream machine. Does anyone have experience and/or recommendations?

Thank you!

I have used a Cuisinart electric ice cream maker for years and have been very happy with it. It cost less than $100 and is not too large for storage. It makes up to two quarts. I keep the freezing bowl in my deep freeze so that I can make ice cream or sorbet whenever I want to. I just checked Cooks Illustrated for their ratings and it was rated a Best Buy in 2011 and 2012. If you want a more expensive model, they rate the Whynter Sno Professional Ice Cream Maker as their Cream of the Crop. In 2012 they listed the price at $219.99.

I've also been very happy with my Cuisinart ice cream maker -- I'm sure there are fancier/pricier options that might work a little bit better (or might be a little bit quieter!), but this basic machine gets the job done, in my experience.

I have a Magimix Gelatochef 2200 which was given to me (by my very kind sister Fiona) about 20 years ago.  Because I now live in the USA I have to power it through a transformer.  It's worth doing that though as it is expensive, powerful and works very well.  Because it has a freezing mechanism in the machine I don't have to ever take up freezer space with the bowl.  Whenever I feel like making ice cream it is ready to go.  I checked on Amazon and it is £250 in the UK and $348 in the USA so as I said, expensive, but if you love making ice cream and want the convenience of a machine you can use immediately, then it's worth it - and the price works out at £12.50 or $17.40 a year (so far).

Thank you very much for replies - now I only have to find someone who delivers to Switzerland....

I've had several models of ice cream makers and finally found the ultimate one for the price range.  It's called Gellato Pro by lello around $300.  No need to keep the container in the freezer which takes up way too much room for me.  I can make ice cream whenever I want without having to freeze the container first.  Makes ultra super creamy ice cream.  I love this machine.

I've had this machine now for over 5 years and it is by far the best machine.

Having discarded my Cuisinart ice cream maker for the KitchenAid attachment, I think I have the right set up for us. Either way, you must have a cannister freezing. But with the KA, I don't have to also stow another machine. The ice cream is comparable. BTW, I recommend the cheap Ben and Jerry's ice cream recipe book.

I have a Cuisinart 2 quart "Pure Indulence" (frozen yogurt, ice cream &sorbet maker) and am really happy with it.  I keep the insert in the big freezer (I do have lots of freezer space) so it is ready to use anytime.  The instructions re timing/add ins work every time and it makes the perfect amount for the 2 of us. I probably paid around $150.00 or 160.00 (Canadian)  for it.  I see there is a newer model out now called the "Cuisinart Cool Creations Ice Cream Maker" for 178.00 Canadian.

I bought a Magimix Gelato Expert 2? years ago after a strange experience with some supposedly premium ice cream. Basically it melted into about a third the size and tasted like eating a bag of sugar. Ice cream here in the UK is sold by volume so its basically injected with as much air as possible to boast its volume.

Not sure if Magimix still make the machine but it's pretty easy and quick  to make and everyone that's tasted its ice cream has commented on how good it is!

I also have a Cuisinart but it does not require its bowl to be put in the freezer before use. I turn it on about 15 minutes before pouring my mixture in and it makes a litre at a time. I bought it about 10 years ago, based on David Lebovitz's advice on his website. I figured if he had recipe tested a book load of ice cream, his advice would be valuable. It is still going strong, though I do acknowledge that it's noisy. I bought it on Amazon.de (I live in the Netherlands).
