I just searched "pork chop"

The search returned one recipe from Pork and Sons, then one from Zuni, then numerous from Bittman. Pork and Sons sounded good, so I opened that book. Their index showed two more pork chop recipes, which made me wonder why the one went to the top of the EYB index, and the others didn't. I presume it's further down in the vast pork chop listings, but curious/confused about how this works.

If you don't specify, the recipes are sorted alphabetically, and, typical of computer alphabetization, "a cream puff" gets alphabetized by A, not by C, and "the best vinegar chicken" by T, not by B.

I personally always sort recipes by author, since for me the author is the most important attribute after the ingredients -- sometimes even more important than the ingredients.

Jane, Fiona, the books used to be alphabetized that way too, but now they are done with "A Cream Puff" at C and "The Best" at B.  Would most people like to have the recipes alphabetized that way too?

The default sort order for recipe search results is relevance to the search term entered.  This is defined as:

1. Search term in recipe name - so if you search on "pork chop" then recipes with those words in the name come first.


2. Search term in ingredients - the next results will have pork chop in the ingredients list but not in the recipe name


3. Search term in author name


4. Search term in book title

So in your pork chop search, the reason why the recipe from Pork & Sons was at the top was for the triple whammy of search words in recipe name, ingredients list and book name.  Though I am confused why the other two pork chop recipes in that book weren't also at the top.  I will investigate further with our developers.

Something to be aware of when searching is that the ingredients filters on the right Only Show.. boxes will give you more precise results than words in the search term box.  As explained, the search box will look anywhere in the database for a match whereas the filters will only list that ingredient in the recipe.  

mcvl - we do intend to remove leading articles from recipe searches, in the same way we do from book titles.  It's on our (very long) to-do list.

Hurrah!  If it's on the list, I have faith that it will happen.

Thx Jane. Something is definately off -- I just tried the pork chop search with Favorites only (Pork and Sons is one of my Favorites) and *nothing* from Pork and Sons came up.

When I search "Pork and Sons: chops", I get all the recipes, so the book is indexed. It's just not showing up on other searches for some reason.

Were you looking in Favorite Books (in the list headed Look in Books) or Favorite Recipes (in the list headed Show only Recipes)?  If you just searched for Favorite Recipes and hadn't designated any, just had the book as a Favorite Book then you would get 0 results.  Likewise, if you searched in Favorite Books and hadn't designated Pork and Sons as a favorite book, just bookmarked some of the recipes, then again you would get 0 results.

Can you please let me know if this was the issue or if you are searching in the right bookmark and I will then investigate further, as I can't reproduce it using my Bookmarks?

In Recipes tab, I search "pork chop" (Look In Book, Show Only Recipes, no Sort by)

First listed is Pork and Sons "Pork Chop with Shallots", 2nd is Zuni Cafe "House Cured Pork Chop"

62 results total, and in # 25-62, the other two Pork and Sons options come up with non-pork chop words "wild boar chop" and "millefeuilles of pork and artichokes" for instance. That's a new wrinkle. In my book's index, it says Pork Chop with Artichokes.

Switch to Favorite Books without changing anything else, get 6 results, lead by Zuni Cafe "House Cured Pork Chop", followed by Baked PC w Cranberries from Gift of Southern Cooking, *nothing* from Pork and Sons now! I haven't marked many favorite recipes, not using that feature here.

And yes, it is bookmarked as Favorite

Ok, generally those results are quite normal.  Entering words in the search box will look for those words in recipe name, recipe ingredients, book name and author name.  So by entering pork chop you will get at the top anything with pork chop in the recipe title, then anything with pork chop as an ingredient then anything with pork or chop in the book or author name and finally any combination.  So you would expect that towards the end of the results you might see some less relevant results e.g. with pork in the book name and chop in the ingredients. You can ensure that the search only looks for the two words together by putting the term in speech marks "pork chop".

The way to make sure you only see the ingredient you want is to select the ingredient in the filters as that relates directly to the actual ingredient not to the words in the ingredient name.  So if you put pork chop in as the search term and select under Ingredients in Only Show.. the category Meat, Pork, Pieces, then you should only see recipes that contain pork chops not recipes in books with pork or chop in the name.  Using the filters makes your searches more precise - the search term box is a broad sweep approach, searching the entire database for the words you enter.

The odd one is why you are not seeing pork chops in the book Pork and Sons when you search in favorite books.  I will look into that one further for you.

I'm a little surprised that there's a different index in your listings than what's in the back of my book. (My book has three entries that start with "Pork Chops") It's not as if there's been a bunch of editions of Pork And Sons...

Not quite the same, but a similar issue:  I searched "lamb shoulder" looking for shoulder chop recipes, and it did not pick up the Nigella Lawson Lamb and Bean Braise recipe that specifies shoulder chops, nor did it pick up any of the several lamb chop Champvallon recipes that are (in my experience) usually made with shoulder chops.  There must be at least a few, even if some are now made with rib chops.

Krisb - you will need to do as I suggested in my Sept 21st post.  The search terms box is looking for the specific words you enter.  So as authors use different terms for cuts of meats, even within the same country, it is better to use the Only Show filters for any cut of meat that can have various names.  So if you enter Lamb pieces in Only Show, you will see all lamb chop recipes, including Nigella's Lamb and bean braise.
