Adding Book Cover   Go to last post Go to last unread

Could you tell me where the book cover photos are coming from?  Can I add covers for those books without covers and also for one with really badly blurred cover photo?

I'd also like to know this.  I work with a very visual memory, so seeing the covers is like finding an old friend whose book spine on the shelf is not nearly so memorable.  I have gone to asking for a list of all my books with the "medium" detail, which is a small picture, title, and some other info.  These printed lists are then cut apart into snippets and inserted into a binder plastic sleeve made for business cards.  Ta-Da!  Backed in the sleeve with colored paper, I also write down the shelf location (even though it's also in my EYB bookmarks).  This is nice for late-night perusing, rather than diligently searching for a recipe.  What is the rhyme-and-reason for the order of book lists, and how can I get a print-out of new books in the same size/format of the standard library listing?

The "rhyme and reason" to booklists is that you can change it to be whatever you want it to be by using the "sort" feature: around the middle of the screen, on the my bookshelf tab "sort by" .. click on that and you can choose A - Z, date published, date indexed, date added to library etc etc.. unfortunately you have to do it each time you log in as we don't appear to have a properties setting as of yet that allows preferences to be set.

I'm not sure, but I think that the default is date added to EYB library.

And, "rivergait" it sounds like you actually have a really good visual memory!

Rinshin - The book cover photos come from Nielsen or Amazon who provide our books data.  We try to find covers for all books that are indexed - we will search the web or as a last resort ask a member who is indexing a book to scan or take a photo of the cover.  We don't have the resources to add missing covers for all books in the Library.  Even Amazon have lots of missing covers and they have a lot more resources than we do!

At some point in the future we plan to add a feature that will allow memebrs to upload their own cover images if the EYB Library is lacking one - or replace a poor quality image.  I'm afarud we don;t have the resources currently to add missing covers manually.  So please by all means create your own images for books you own, then keep them in a foller.  Then when we add the feature you will be able to upload your images so all your Bookshelf will have covers.

rivergait - the default sort order for books is "Latest indexed" but as debkelliemember says, you can change the sort order to anything you want.

Thank you Jane.  I often associate books of the cover and when they are missing, it feels like my friends are faceless.  Also, there was one really blurred book cover that caught my eye and I knew I can take a photo and upload easily.

Rinshin,

I wonder if you could add those images to Amazon (under "Share your own customer images") and then they might show up?

For some reason not all customer images can be downloaded.  I wonder whether they have to give permission to make their photo available to Amazon affiliates?

nicolepellegrini - thank you, I will give that a try soon.  I've added recipe results to cookbooks on Amazon before.  I wonder if it's the same procedure - I'll check it out.

There are huge numbers of covers at/on Library Thing.  I think you can copy them. It appears that a lot of books change covers with different print run, not necessarily different editions.

I have never figured a good system of shelving so I too use my visual memory to find a book, however, I remember the spine. I guess that is what I see rather than the observe [front].

Thanks eyepaint - we do look on LibraryThing as well as OpenLibrary, WorldCat and every bookseller online.  But sometimes no-one has a cover and scanning it is the only option.  Did you know you can use EYB Bookmarks to help locate books - create Bookmarks with names as needed - "dining room left", "kitchen top", etc. which narrows down your searches a lot.
