Keeping notes on cookbooks not in the library.   Go to last post Go to last unread

I've got a Swedish cookbook and I'd like to capture notes on some of the recipes that I've made.  The book has an ISBN number, but naturally I know that most members would not be interested in this so I don't expect EYB to add foreign language books to the library.  However, I'd like to keep notes on some of the recipes and be able to group them together.  I can't really figure out how I can do this, although I am sure there is a way.

How would you suggest I track this for myself?

One way you could do it would be to offer to "Member Index" it for the EYB library .. you may be surprised how many people might have it in their collection! You can do that by sending an email to [email protected] with details of the book, ISBN, number of pages, a scanof the cover, and a scan of the  copyright page and then once you've entered all the recipes, you could add notes.. but otherwise I don't think EYB affords a general "notes" section for personal notes that are NOT attached to a particular book..

Just enter the recipes in Personal Recipes and you can add your notes there.

Stockholm28 - we will add any book to the EYB Library if it has an ISBN.  Though it does have to be listed by Amazon since the data is imported from them.  Just import the ISBN in Import Books, which you access from the My Bookshelf tab at the top.  Then you can add Notes under the book for the recipes - some members are currently doing this for books that are not yet indexed.  Or as debkellie suggests you can index the book then the Notes can be listed for each recipe.

Hi Jane.  When you say if found in Amazon, does this apply to Amazon Japan.  I order manyof my Japanese books there and I tried importing ISBN number associated with one of the books but it did not recognize it.  978-4873035680.

Rinshin -- We don't get information from Amazon Japan, but that book you added actually was recognized as an Japanse imported book. If an ISBN you add is not in the Library, it will not show up immediately even if the book information is available on Amazon. All ISBNs with a match on Amazon get added to a queue that we then must import manually before it will appear on your shelf. I found yours in our queue and I have added it, so it should be showing up on your Bookshelf in the next few minutes, if it has not already.

Actually the import from Amazon is automatic but it can take a few hours to appear on your Bookshelf.  The only books that cannot be imported are those that Amazon does not list or those that Amazon has not tagged as food or drink.  The reason the book has to be tagged as that we have had some members import their entire library (sex manuals and all) so we have to make sure that only food and drink books get added.

If you ever have a book that hasn't imported and you want to index it, let us know and we will track down your request and import the book manually.

Well the ISBN of the version I have (written in Swedish) is not on amazon, but I discovered an English language translation on amazon.  So I will give it a try with the English version.  That will work.  I just wanted a heading to put my notes under.  I've done notes on other non-indexed books.

Thanks!.

You also noted that the book had to be tagged as food or drink.  How can you tell on amazon that it is tagged?  I have the feeling the book that I want to add is not tagged.

stockholm28 - you cannot see the tags that Amazon gives books but they come in as part of our data import.  Your book was fine, it just hadn't been processed yet.  I pushed it through for you - you should now see it on your Bookshelf.  It is in the Library.
