I love my OXO digital scales. They go up to 11lbs, have digital and imperial weights, easy tare reset to zero and a pull-out display (useful when a large bowl is on the scale). Definitely not the cheapest around but I've had mine for many years and no issues at all with it.

I agree with Jane about the OXO digital scales. I have had mine forever and it is extremely easy and efficient to use. I watched a friend struggle with her Sharper Image digital scale and wondered why she even bothered with it. It wasn’t user friendly at all and kept turning off while a group of us were doing a cheeseball project that required weighing multiple amounts of cheese. Those with OXO scales just sailed through while she was fussing with her scale.

I'm in the UK, and my scales are Soehnle, because the digital display is exceptional clear, and I've also used their scales in labs and clinics

The OXO ones look good, the thing is to get one on which the tare function is easy to use, so you can just keep tapping to re-zero, no arithmetic required

Several years ago I read in one of my cookbooks that I should use a clean wine cork when making thumbprint cookies so I gave it a try and realized that it was much easier and gave better results than using my thumb. Since then I’ve kept a cork from white wine in my baking drawer. This past weekend I found another use for my trusty cork. I was making tiny tartlets and was pre-baking them when I noticed they were puffing in odd places. I tried using my tart tamper tool but it was too big. Looking around for something else to quickly reshape my little tart shells I grabbed my wine cork and it was the perfect shape and size to push the dough back into shape.

How about a thimble - I've seen that recommended.

I have a new appreciation for a couple long neglected appliances- my countertop steamer and my rice cooker. We recenttly endured a 4 month kitchen renovation, much of it w/o an oven or cooktop. I used my steamer, previously solely devoted to broccoli, to make rice, and after much trial and error, runny eggs! I used my rice cooker to make a meal, placing chopped pork belly (not the healthiest but needs must) on top and baby bok choy at the last minute. Stir in a little sauce and dinner is served. Now that I'm back in the kitchen those have gone back on the shelf.

Congratulations on your new/renewed kitchen, Barb!  It can be a misery if the project goes way long, but gives renewed appreciation for the conveniences we often take for granted.

Your experience, plus reading about young people in expensive-housing cities, has made me wonder whether some of them are cooking mostly or entirely with non-stove setups (multi-cooker, multi-oven, single induction burner).

An extended stay at my brother’s house spanning US Thanksgiving thru New Year’s, and cooking in their kitchen, has left me with multiple insights, pro and con…

CON: I hated not having my Microplanes when zesting citrus and grating hard cheeses. Once you Microplane, there is no going back.

PRO: Lacking a citrus reamer, I tried the tongs hack. OMG the leverage! It actually works way better and easier than a reamer, it works way better and easier than a juicer. When I get home, tongs are going to be my go to for citrus juicing.

CON: Multiple, big, preps bowls really speeds things up. I didn’t realize how much I relied on them. Limited to one, I was slowed down a fair bit in some circumstances.

PRO: I have latex gloves at home. They have nitrile gloves. Even sticky doughs (e.g., biscotti) don’t stick to nitrile gloves. When I get home, I’m buying nitrile gloves and the latex gloves get consigned to cleaning tasks.

Finally got the Männkitchen Pepper Cannon. Now I can season a steak from across the room...

Marimar I'm looking up the pepper cannon because how can we not have one?

I do love my gadgets, but I think my favorite is a tool carousel from Pampered Chef because it holds all my prep tools in one place. The spatulas, whisks, tongs, ladel, a few small knives, some sharpie markers, it goes on and on. I love that carousel!

First off..I researched then promptly orderd the Mannkitchen pepper cannon :)

I have lots of things I know I would miss having while working in the kitchen BUT at this time of year, I can't imagine not having my "3 blade choices" food mill.  The smoothest tomato purees, sauces & soups fill my canning cupboard/freezers in late summer/fall and I can't imagine my preserving season without it.

Oxo's large salad spinner is one of my most frequent tools. And if you are outfitting a small kitchen, besides being a salad spinner, it's a good sized prep bowl and a collander all in that one storage package.

We love our new pepper cannon...but learned quickly to NOT (absent mindedly) hold it over your bowl and "start cranking" like it was your old one.  Those meatballs were....peppery!!

A follow-up on the previously recommended Souper Cubes, the silicone freezing trays for portions. I’ve started using the 2 cup version more and have discovered that 4-2 cup portions fit easily into a gallon freezer bag, while 8-1 cup portions are a very tight fit — it’s a difference in the heights and widths of the frozen blocks.

Jar opener. Work with a motion like a can opener, but just releases the vacuum seal from a new jar so it twists off easily.

Magic. Don't know how I survived for so long without one.

I recently bought a cheap Japanese cabbage peeler while browsing in a shop in China Town. My husband said he had seen it on Japanese Tik Tok videos and I wanted to try it. I cannot explain how wonderful it is!  It shaves the cabbage into the perfect size for eating raw in salads.  It is also very easy to use. I can shave half a cabbage perfectly in a minute or two. Can't explain how obsessed I am. I am giving them to everyone in my life for Christmas this year!

Thank you Lepa! We love coleslaw so I checked out the cabbage peeler and it's now a stocking stuffer request :)

Over 50 years ago when I was in art school, a classmate of mine who had worked as a house painter, taught me that if you bang the lid edge of an unopened jar on the floor, it will break the vacuum and open easily, without ever breaking the jar.

I love my German potato ricer! I got it new in its box at a thrift store! Makes great mashed potatoes.

I have a sort of reversal of this to ask. Some time ago I picked up a Spätzle Maker from a Sur La Table sale rack for $4. Besides making Spätzle, does anyone know of a use for one?
