OK, I don't need this, have no intention of buying it. But you might. Or maybe I might....

Another 2017 James Beard winner,

All Under Heaven: Recipes from the 35 Cuisines of China Kindle Edition

#185 Posted : Wednesday, August 9, 2017 1:40:29 PM(UTC)
All Under Heaven is such a great book that I bought it for myself at full price through a local indie bookstore after the holidays (Santa didn't come through despite heavy hints).

If it's as thoughtfully formatted for tablet as the physical book is for reading and cooking, that's a tremendous bargain. [And it is a sizable book, so would save quite a bit of space on a crowded shelf.] I got it to learn more about China's physical regions and culture, not primarily as a cookbook, but it's also a very good and accessible cooking guide.

What do you consider the best tutorial for using Kindle?  Ihavepurchased a few books which are on several of my devices...but there must be some better way of using the cookbooks other than scanning-scanning-scanning, not having much of an idea of what's there or where it is. How much content is resident downloaded, how can I use the cloud (should I ask for that specifically), how do I find the place in the book that a recipe resides, and how do I go to that place.  Really basic stuff.  I like kindle for rare "book" reading (I can find chapters and know where I left off), but cookbooks?  Not so much.

ecookbooks vary a lot in terms of how best to use them.  Some have very useful tables of contents and indexes that link directly to recipes.  Others are not as thoughtfully edited.  If the ecookbook is indexed here on EYB, looking up the recipe on the EYB website and then doing a search on your Kindle can work when indexes and tables of contents do not.

Having said that, my favorite way to use ecookbooks is with the free Kindle app on my iPad.  (I believe there's also an app for Android tablets.)  That way I can see all the color pictures in color, and the screen is larger on my iPad than on my Kindle.  Oh, yes, there is also a free Kindle application that runs under Windows.  Not sure about Macs, but I would guess there's one for them too.  You can have copies of the same book on as many devices as are registered to you without paying anything extra.

About the cloud, Amazon takes care of all of that for you.  Whether you use a Kindle or a Kindle app, it checks in with Amazon to see what you've purchased.  You can always double check by telling it ti Sync.  If you want to read something that is not on your device, it is automatically downloaded.  If you need to make room, you can archive it.

I hope this helps.  These days, almost all of my cookbook purchases are digital.

Just found the Dahlia Bakery Cookbook for $1.99 on kindle at Amazon and Homemade Pasta Made Simple also for $1.99.

I agree with PinchofSalt and like using Kindle ecookbooks on my iPad. I usually check the contents - most seem to have a list of recipes but not all do. I like the ability to bookmark recipes so I can refer to the bookmarks later.

Thanks Pinch. Using my EYB for contents (and even page numbers!) is a great idea. I will go back to struggle through my purchases, which I do see on my Android phone, my tablet, and my desktop computer.  One problem I see is that only partial purchased books are being shown...mostly due to my impatience [they're slowly being downloaded when I thought communication between me and Amazon Kindle was dead]. Of course, the "loaded and visible" books turn out to be snippets of"suggested" purchases, which Amazon seems to intersperse, one from me, one from them. At least I can browse while I wait for my purchases to appear. Thanks again.

Rivergait,

Amazon automatically downloads your purchases to one of your devices, usually your Kindle.  (You can change the default device on the Amazon website).  For your other devices, there is a button in the app or program to synchronize what your device thinks you have purchased with what Amazon knows.  This updates what you see in your library.  You can click on anything in your library to read it.  If a copy is not on your device, it will be downloaded.

In my experience, I do not get any "suggested purchases" showing up in my library listing.  Then again, when I bought my Kindle I paid extra for "no advertising".  It's a trade-off.  At least we get to choose!

Me too.  I like using ipad for kindle books.  I also like using it for all online recipes.

The Elements of Pizza by Ken Forkish is 2.99 today.  Some really amazing pizza that I used to drive near an hour across the city to enjoy.  :)

Two Oregon chefs! I already have Naomi's book but just bought the Elements of Pizza.  Thanks for the heads up.

Aack! This makes three e-cookbooks this month for me, but all were well worth it at the $3. price. Would have been four if I hadn't missed the short window on Small Victories; I think that's a cookbook that's going to keep selling well by word of mouth, and may wind up here in physical form eventually. [Another chance to assuage Amz guilt by ordering through local bookstore.]

But I now have enough of my 2016 wishlist in hand to try for a while not to check in on this thread so often...

Thanks to all those who post here for further enriching the already invaluable EYB experience.

I am really enjoying the Elements of Pizza - what a great cookbook.  Learning so much about origin of pizza in Italy and in US.  Gorgeous photos too.  Can't wait until I actually try the pizzas.
