hillsboroks - that is a bug on the iPad which is on our developer's fix list.

Hi. When I'm browsing my bookshelf in the Android stock browser called Internet (the one that displays a comfortable font size), I sometimes want to see which books are indexed, which are not, and which are being indexed now. Trouble is, the drop-down Filter menu won't scroll.
#123 Posted : Monday, May 30, 2016 6:37:53 PM(UTC)
Also, when I'm browsing in the Library, or on someone's bookshelf, how do I know if a book is indexed or not?
#124 Posted : Monday, May 30, 2016 10:12:09 PM(UTC)
When viewing on a phone there are filters for Indexed, Indexing Now and Unindexed. You click the Filter icon in the green bar at top right. When you say you cannot scroll, can you please email us a screenshot of what you can see on screen when you click filters, and what is the lowest it goes when scrolling?

You can also see for any individual book whether it is indexed by clicking the down arrow under the book details which shows more information, including the indexing status.

Re: #120, #121:  I'm experiencing a mild version of this same bug (laptop, running Firefox on Windows 7).  In comments to blog posts, the right edge is shaved off, so that sometimes one letter is cut off (never a whole word).

Take care when scrolling through your bookshelf. If you happen to use your left hand for scrolling on a tablet it is very easy to accidentally delete a book , and you might not realise it till you notice that the number of your books is going backwards. This has only been an issue with the new site because previously the bookshelf icon was in the centre of the screen well away from careless fingers.
I have lost track of 3 books since the change and managed to find 2 of them this morning by comparing with an out of date print out that I had made 4 years ago. Have no idea what the other one was.

Thanks Jane. It didn't fix the issue on my phone. I do have an iPad now, and compatibility is much better. Think I'll just use that to avoid the strange iPhone 5 problem.

I can't remember if this was true in the old version of the site, but... this is a request that would make search pages more transparent.

Currently, when looking at a page of recipe search results on My Bookshelf, most of the search constraints applied are visible:  keywords, sort order, filter terms chosen or excluded.  But if a book or recipe Bookmark is used to further restrict the choices (via 'Look in Books' or 'Show only Recipes'), it doesn't appear at or near the dialog box where it's selected.

When doing a search of recipes, I often restrict it to a particular subgroup of books by choosing a Bookmark from 'Look in Books'.   Once I do that, it seems to narrow down the choices correctly, but it's a little unsettling because there's no way to confirm which Bookmark is in effect as a search restriction -- even if you open the drop-down dialog, it doesn't default to showing the selection highlighted, but reverts to the no-choice position.

The same thing is true if a restriction is made via 'Show only Recipes' -- but at least there the operative Bookmark can be guessed at by scanning for the Bookmark the search results have in common, since Bookmarks display with the recipes (in the default list view, at least).  Still, it would be better if it were visible at the dialog box where it was selected.

This is more in the nature of a bug fix than a wanted features (and hopefully easier to implement than many of those).

[Re-edited to restore my original impression; behavior is the same with both Book and Recipe Bookmarks.]

#129 Posted : Thursday, June 23, 2016 5:14:19 PM(UTC)

To add to ellabee's post... Actually, I have the same issue when I use a recipe Bookmark as she describes for book Bookmarks.  (I am using Chrome on a laptop.)

Also, I've noticed that if I apply a bookmark to a search and then make any other change to that search (i.e. add or remove a word in the search box or select one of the Only Show filters for online recipes, book recipes, etc. to refine my search), the Bookmark I already applied is automatically removed and must be reapplied.

Thanks, Christine, for adding the point about the volatility of Bookmark selections.  If any of the keywords, sort order, and filter selections is changed, the others seem to stay stable, but the Bookmark selection needs to be made last if you don't want to have to re-enter it.

Because I've been routinely using Bookmarks to restrict searches for a while, I'm pretty sure that in the older version of the site, the selections persisted through changes in other search terms (key words, sort order, filters).  I don't have a real problem with the new behavior, provided that:

1) the selected Bookmark displays when in effect, and

2) the point about selecting a Bookmark search restriction last is made in the tutorials on searches (assuming the current behavior is not a temporary bug).

Re my earlier post #120 about the comments getting cut off on Darcie's blog posts when viewed on an iPad. I just discovered that if I change the orientation on my iPad to landscape instead of normal that I can now see about 99% of the comment. This isn't perfect but until the developers are able to fully fix the issue this seems to be a reasonable work around.

I'm using Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. When I try to filter on only my Unindexed books, both "Indexed" and "Unindexed" are checked. If I uncheck "Indexed", then "Unindexed" gets unchecked. It does show only my Unindexed but if I then try to change the sort order I get "no results".

#133 Posted : Tuesday, June 28, 2016 2:05:22 AM(UTC)

The bug of both Unindexed Books and Indexed Books radio buttons being checked when filtering for Unindexed Books happens for me also, on a laptop with Firefox and Windows 7.

Changing the sort order after checking Unindexed Books gives 0 results, as does selecting a Bookmark to narrow the search. If the sort order is chosen first, and then Unindexed Books is checked, results are as they should be (although the checkmark does also appear beside Indexed Books), and it behaves normally/gives accurate results if I narrow the search by typing in a keyword or several.  But it still blows up to 0 results if I then try to select a Bookmark.

ellabee - the bug with the Unindexed books filter is logged with our developer and I have chased him on it. He has been bogged down recently with our server upgrade - hopefully you will have noticed the site is faster in the last week. That is now complete so he can get back on to bug fixes.

That issue with the Bookmark filter not displaying was on the old site too but I will raise it with our developer and see if it can be resolved. The issue that Christine mentions that Bookmark filters get lost when other search filters are changed is a new one and is now logged.

#135 Posted : Tuesday, June 28, 2016 1:10:02 PM(UTC)

I thought the site was running faster since last week - nice!  :)

I'm glad the indexed/unindexed books issue mentioned by pitterpat4 and ellabee is being addressed - I have been running up against it as well.

#136 Posted : Tuesday, June 28, 2016 2:40:26 PM(UTC)

Thanks, Jane.  I'm sure everyone involved is glad to be on the 'done & dusted' side of a server upgrade! I did a fair amount of  testing searches while pulling the bug posts together, and had the impression they were faster than usual.  Glad to know it was real.

Last night (6-29-16) I noticed that I was logged out of EYB on my iPad and after many attempts to log in using both my email address and user ID I found that I could not log in.  Today I checked EYB on my desktop computer at my office and all is good and I am still logged in.  But I have tried a couple more times on the iPad and no luck.  Is this part of the server upgrade?

#138 Posted : Thursday, June 30, 2016 3:46:47 PM(UTC)

hillsboroks - the sever upgrade does not affect sign-ins. We have communicated by email on your issue and it has been resolved by making some changes to your browser settings on your iPad.

If any member ever does find they cannot sign-in to EYB it is always worth checking on another device. If you can sign-in there, then the problem is usually caused by a glitch in the browser. This can often be resolved by clearing cache/history in the browser.

I've almost entirely stopped interacting with the site unless I am searching my shelves for something. I don't read the notes or the forums because the layout of the home page is so ugly and cluttered now.

And I wasn't able to post any comments for a couple of months.

#140 Posted : Sunday, September 18, 2016 12:44:51 AM(UTC)

Foodycat - I am sorry to hear that you dislike the Home Page so much. But you don't need to avoid the new Notes feature and the Forum because you want to avoid the Home page. You can set the Library or your Bookshelf as your Bookmark and that way you just go straight to where you want to be. There is no reason at all for you to go to the Home Page if you don't want to.

I checked back through our emails about your issue not being able to post comments on the Forum. In my last email to you I made a couple of suggestions and asked you to contact us again if you still had a problem. I didn't hear from you again so I assumed it was fixed.

If any member ever does have an issue on the site, please do email us at [email protected] and we will try to help you resolve it.
