• Walnut roll (Potica)

    I wasn't thrilled with this potica but recognize some of the problem may have been on my end. First, my dough didn't seem to rise very well but that could have been my yeast. Second, the filling was much too watery. When my relatives make potica it has a thick walnut filling and I didn't get that here. The filling spilled out as I rolled the potica, making a mess. Once I baked this, it was fine but not great. I'll probably seek another recipe for my next try.

• Fruit loaf

    I used Gaitri’s dried fruit ingredients and added them to King Arthur’s Whole Wheat Sandwich loaf recipe. Turned out great! Will definitely make this again.

• Chocolate hazelnut buns

    Very good, but could maybe use a drizzle of icing or something on top. A tad dry.

• Banana cake

    One slice and straight into the bin! Baked for 5 minutes extra, checked with thermometer and yet it wasn't cooked in the middle. Taste was weird. Really annoying, especially as it was much more work and ingredients than my usual "never fail " banana cake.

• Multilayered spice cake (Kue lapis or spekkoek)

    Very unusual baking method using the broiler. I had trouble pouring thin enough layers so I think I ended up with one or two less than I was supposed to, but no big deal. It's a very simple cake, but the cross-section of the layers looks very pretty and it has a nice delicate spice flavor.

• Buttery shortcake (Boterkoek)

    I made the hazelnut version which is incredible. Easy to make – the hardest part is judging when it is done.

• Yogurt cake (Yogurtlu kek or yaourtopita)

    The recipe suggests this is best if left for a couple of days before serving. Obviously not here ?? Tasted a little oily (no oil in it!) so we’ll have to see if that goes if it leave the rest…. Easy bake.
