Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Sticky lemon slice [Julie Biuso]

    • e_ballad on September 24, 2017

This is super-sweet, too much for our liking. And just a couple of helpful hints: Ignore the instruction to only paper the bottom of the pan - paper EVERY surface as this was really sticky (hence the title!). And let it cool completely: I left it an hour - it still disintegrated. Maybe even refrigerate overnight. This one wasn't for us.

  • Caramel oat slice [Jo Seagar]

    • e_ballad on October 03, 2022

My word. This is so delicious & incredibly easy to make. It does make a huge quantity, but I can promise that this is NOT an issue!

  • Queen Elizabeth cake [Natalie Oldfield]

    • balmaingirl on July 31, 2016

This is a cracker! I made it today and mine looked just like the photo in the book and tasted delicious. You could probably do this as a dessert as well and serve warm with thick cream or a very good vanilla ice cream

  • Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting [Ruth Pretty]

    • e_ballad on September 08, 2019

      Absolutely delicious.

  • Crunchy-topped feijoa & walnut cake [Natalie Oldfield]

    • ChelseaP on July 08, 2022

Nice cake if you have a glut of feijoas.

  • Banana cake [Jo Seagar]

    • e_ballad on December 05, 2017

Also found in the “The Great New Zealand Cookbook”, this may be one of our favourite banana cake recipes. Big call I know, but the crumb was divine, the flavour was fantastic & it has good staying power (if you can restrain yourself from eating the whole lot in one sitting).

  • Cheese muffins [Hester Guy]

    • e_ballad on October 03, 2020

These are excellent. They are HUGE though. I’ll probably reduce the size for future outings.

  • Beetroot chocolate loaf cake [Niki Bezzant]

    • e_ballad on December 02, 2016

Whilst this is undoubtedly healthy, that unfortunately doesn't translate to 'tasty'. Effectively a slab of baked grated beetroot with a small amount of chocolate holding it together. Not very good at all.

  • Fruity banana, carrot & pineapple cake [Niki Bezzant]

    • e_ballad on November 13, 2020

This cake is a representation of how I feel about “healthy treats”: if you want cake, eat a beautiful decadent cake & love it for what it is. If you want “health food”, don’t eat cake. Especially don’t eat this monstrosity. Barely edible, this was universally hated by everyone.

  • Frittata with zucchini & basil [Martin Bosley]

    • e_ballad on January 20, 2017

So-so. The quantity of Parmesan was significantly large compared to the other components - I used 1/2 the amount & found that this verged on overwhelming the other flavours.

  • Chicken, leek & mushroom pie [Tony Astle]

    • e_ballad on September 17, 2018

A great chicken pie, with components that the author recommends preparing a day ahead. We found it too sweet for our liking & would reduce the Madeira accordingly.
