Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Roast chicken and carrots with mustard and thyme

    • twoyolks on January 30, 2020

I really liked the chicken. It was flavorful and had a nice crunch from the bread crumbs. The Dijon mustard worked very well. My carrots did not get fully cooked. I think they need to be rather small carrots for it to work.

  • Brothy beans and farro with eggs and mushrooms

    • meggan on June 25, 2018

I hacked this quite a bit by using pre-made stock and canned beans. I think it was still pretty good!

  • Shrimp tacos with pineapple

    • chawkins on May 15, 2018

Quite tasty even though I forgot the sriracha in the shrimp marinade as I was distracted by a fast approaching storm, rushing thru the steps, fearing that the power would go off at any moment. Once all the ingredients were prepped, the dish came together in literally minutes. Just have to repeat this with the proper marinade to do it justice.

4.5 stars. Really tasty for minimal effort. The charred pineapple balances the spice on the shrimp with the pickled onions cutting through and balancing the sweetness. Served with elotes. Will make again!

    • clcorbi on March 02, 2018

Run, don't walk to this recipe--it comes together in maybe 20 minutes and the result is delicious. Next time I'd decrease the pineapple slightly--while we both enjoyed how caramelized it go, we didn't enjoy having such a high pineapple to shrimp ratio. Otherwise, this is perfect and so full of flavor--will repeat.

  • The greenest coconut curry with clams and rice noodles

    • Barb_N on February 09, 2018

I simplified the curry as I could not see the point of making two sauces (aromatics plus fish sauce and brown sugar, and herb puree). I combined these, leaving out the fish sauce and brown sugar. In retrospect a little sweetness might have added more complexity. I subbed shrimp for clams and we loved it. The soup is such a vibrant green you can feel the 'Healthy' with the first slurp.

I made this again, trying to follow the recipe more closely. My serrano chile tasted hot so I only put half in the ‘curry’ puree- hard to add more later when it’s not hot enough. I also sought out coconut cream as specified in the recipe, only mine was a solid chunk sold in a box. At first bite the coconut overwhelmed the rest of the flavors, but more nuance came through as I got to the bottom of the bowl, especially as I garnished it with a white radish, scallions and slices of serrano. Next time I will use easy to find-known quantity coconut milk. Used shrimp this time too.

  • Wheat berry bowl with merguez and pomegranate

    • clcorbi on June 05, 2018

Excellent. We loved all the different flavors and textures in this bowl. I substituted farro for the wheat berries, otherwise followed the recipe as written. On top of that, the recipe was fairly fast to throw together, and makes a lot of food--perfect for a weeknight dinner and lunches. I will definitely be repeating this.

  • Citrus and avocado salad with orange water

    • Shelmar on February 01, 2021

      Easy, yummy.
