Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Fried apples 'n' onions

    • lkgrover on January 11, 2025

Good apples and onions -- with bacon! I enjoyed for breakfast. (I think the recipe title omits one of the key ingredients. Unfortunately this is not indexed under "bacon" in my book's index either, although it is found under apples.)

  • Green tomato pickles

    • chezlarios on November 06, 2022

I made one-fifth of the recipe since I had only one pound of tomatoes - it made for some awkward conversions! In the end I needed slightly more vinegar and water. I also used the water bath process rather than the open kettle canning method, for extra safety.

  • Molasses-on-snow candy

    • anwade88 on January 07, 2018

This was fun to make, but tastes too much like molasses to be loved by our kids. I’m glad we did the activity though! This is one of the favorite parts of the book for my daughter and she has wanted to make molasses candy forever!

  • Heart-shaped cakes

    • anwade88 on January 07, 2018

These have a really nice texture. They are not overly sweet. My six year old had an easy time following the recipe—however she found the results to be underwhelming (in her mind cake is very sweet and frosted). Nonetheless I liked this very well. I think they would make a lovely breakfast item.
