Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Shiso spritz [Victor Gainor, Vicia]

    • skvalentine on March 26, 2023

Interesting! I couldn't find citrus tonic so I used elderflower tonic instead, plus a squeeze of lime. I'm not sure I would make this again, but it was a beautiful pink color-- very festive.

    • ethedens on April 12, 2024

I couldn't find red shiso so used all green. It was good- not my favorite flavor but the taste was surprisingly close to alcohol

  • Midnight magic [Eduardo Guzman, Mission and Market]

    • mjes on July 26, 2021

This recipe is under a heading "Espresso and tonic with lime" of which "Midnight magic" is a particular variation. The secret of this variation is black walnut bitters. Thanks to Mark Bitterman, black walnut bitters is in my pantry. This is another great way for Seattlites to keep their coffee intake up ... it can be iced and does not raise the calorie count into the stratosphere.

  • Yu the great [Samantha Azarow, Departure]

    • mjes on July 26, 2021

I started testing this book with Yu the great because all the ingredients are easily gotten. Lime-Thai basil-matcha-coconut milk is an ideal mix - likely unknown but still approachable. It definitely will be repeated.

    • ethedens on September 24, 2024

This was surprisingly similar to alcohol. The syrup is amazing but it gets drowned out a bit. Overall, a nice non-alcoholic nightcap. 3.25/5

  • The NYC special [Lainey Collum, Pass and Provisions]

    • klrclark on January 28, 2021

      Very sweet...but it's like a dessert.

  • Don't touch my car keys [Shelby Allison, Lost Lake]

    • ethedens on July 23, 2022

Really enjoyed this! The coconut syrup was way easier to make than I expected, and this was a nicely balanced drink.

  • Salted rosemary paloma [Naren Young, Dante]

    • Nrnarayan on June 12, 2025

I liked this, but definitely felt like a mocktail

  • Sunomono [Sean Umstead, Kingfisher]

    • Nrnarayan on June 12, 2025

great mocktail to batch and enjoy over the week. I adjust the amount of shrub per drink, the recommended amount was too sweet for me

  • Change of address [Eric Nelson, Eem]

    • Nrnarayan on July 30, 2025

This was SOO weird, part of me is tempted to mess with the proportions and fix this because the combo seems cool.

Publishers Text

Blackberry-infused cold brew with almond milk and coconut cream. Smoky tea paired with tart cherry juice. A bittersweet, herbal take on the Pimm’s Cup. Writer Julia Bainbridge spent a summer driving across the U.S. going to bars, restaurants, and everything in between in pursuit of the question: Can you make an outstanding nonalcoholic drink? The answer came back emphatically: “Yes.”
