Tres leches cake with berries from Make It Ahead: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook (page 215) by Ina Garten

Where’s the full recipe - why can I only see the ingredients?

Accompaniments: Make-ahead whipped cream

Always check the publication for a full list of ingredients. An Eat Your Books index lists the main ingredients and does not include 'store-cupboard ingredients' (salt, pepper, oil, flour, etc.) - unless called for in significant quantity.

This was outstanding!! I made for a dinner party and everyone was couldn't believe how delicious it was and everyone cleared their plates. Adding this to my rotation of favorite desserts! Definitely need a stand mixer (I giggled reading Ina's comment of really! in reaction to mixing the eggs and sugar for 10 minutes). Maybe I'd decrease sugar in cake but I didn't think the cake itself was overly sweet. The berries only need as much additional sugar as in season the berries are. I erred on 3 T. for out of season strawberries and I thought it was perfect.

I made this as written for my sister in law’s birthday at a restaurant. I stood and operated the hand mixer for 10 minutes because it’s all I have. I was very worried about the Make Ahead Whipped Cream since I would be traveling to the restaurant in hot Texas weather and I wasn’t sure how long dinner would last. I put everything in an ice chest and the restaurant agreed to put everything in the refrigerator. Not only did the whipped cream hold shape when it came time to serve (about 3 hours after whipping), but it still held form the next morning! I didn’t add sugar to the berries and everyone thought the cake was amazing. I wish I had read the reviews on the Food Network site. Some said that they decreased sugar in the cake, which I will try next time. I will also try with rum or cinnamon. I think there’s opportunity to decrease sugar in the whipped cream. Sisterw in law loved the almond extract flavor in the cake. This one is definitely a keeper!

This tres leches cake was delicious, and is easy to make as written if, and only if, you own a stand mixer. Of course the addition of a full vanilla bean doesn't hurt anything. 7 hours in the fridge achieved ideal results. I did not make the accompanying Make Ahead Whipped Cream in this cookbook. Instead, I spread a thin layer of freshly whipped cream over the top before serving, and garnished the cake by using whipped cream from a can to create a decorative edge and bases for birthday candles. Served with heaps of sugared mixed berries.

This is the #1 most requested dessert by people at work. The cake is easy to make. Note that the milks really need to be absorbed overnight; 6 hours isn't quite enough. I spread stabilized whipped cream over the top and garnish with berries or serve them on the side. You can reduce the sugar a bit in the whipped cream and berries, if desired, although we did not think the cake was too sweet.

Rich and delicious. A great dessert to bring to a pot-luck gathering and small pieces will satisfy most.
