Croque-monsieur from The Gourmet Cookbook: More Than 1000 Recipes by Gourmet Magazine Editors and Ruth Reichl

Where’s the full recipe - why can I only see the ingredients?

Always check the publication for a full list of ingredients. An Eat Your Books index lists the main ingredients and does not include 'store-cupboard ingredients' (salt, pepper, oil, flour, etc.) - unless called for in significant quantity.

Notes about this recipe

We were trying to replicate our sentimental visit to El Prado museum where we had a fabulous croque monsieur on an enchanting day. This version was not what we desired. We used a thicker, country-style white bread and the cooking method did not crisp as much as we hoped. The dinner was fine but it felt more like a Danish smorrebrod than the crispy/cheesy grilled cheese like sandwich from Madrid. Tasty for what it is but not what we were looking to have.

We love this knife and fork sandwich for a supper with a salad. We don't bother removing the crusts from the bread, but it would be a more elegant dish if we did. And, while it's not technically a croque monsieur, leftover roast turkey works well for this sandwich.
