    Can substitute cornstarch mixed with vanilla extract for Bird's custard powder.

    I've made custard creams before and felt that the plain custard powder didn't offer very much in the way of flavour, so I added a bit of vanilla bean paste to both the biscuits and the buttercream. I also made the biscuits with brown butter, which was a big improvement on the ones I had made before but meant the biscuits didn't have the uniform gold colour. If I make them again I will pipe the filling. Smearing on with a palette knife gave too uneven a finish.
