Black sesame otsu from Super Natural Every Day: Well-Loved Recipes from My Natural Foods Kitchen (page 156) by Heidi Swanson

Where’s the full recipe - why can I only see the ingredients?

Always check the publication for a full list of ingredients. An Eat Your Books index lists the main ingredients and does not include 'store-cupboard ingredients' (salt, pepper, oil, flour, etc.) - unless called for in significant quantity.

Notes about this recipe

  • Eat Your Books

Can substitute tamari or soy sauce for shoyu, and brown sugar for cane sugar.

This is a tasty, easy dish to make. I left out the tofu and served it as a side dish together with a variety of simple Japanese-style dishes. As Swanson notes, the black sesame paste has a number of uses - massaged into vegetables, as topping on a rice bowl, etc.

This was amazing. Love the paste- the best of salty, sweet, savory, sour, hot, bitter all in one. Also, this is the type of recipe that you can riff on to suit the foods you love the best- I had tofu in my bowl per the recipe, and my husband had chicken and broccoli. Love love love.
