While searching recipes, I find myself having to use 2 or sometimes all 3 search terms to find specific recipes. One area of confusion for me is chili vs chilli. Does anyone know if there is a regional reason for the 2 different terms for what seems to be the same dish? I also just searched chili powder and then chile powder - again I get 2 different lists for the same idea.  I am curious if anyone has some background on the overlap of terminology.

From where we reside (western US), chilli is British, chili is the finished dish containing chiles.  Chile is Spanish origin so it is chile for the hot peppers.  But like you, I have to search using chilli and chile for the same thing.  Where I get confused which term to use is when Asian hot peppers and finished recipes or sauces are called.  It seems they mostly use the British term chilli.

It's a matter of cultural influence... nice explanation at this link

Thanks for both responses! I read the link provided and it really did answer my Q.  This started as I searched for a Diana Henry sausage and  black bean chili that I knew I had made ......of course I used CHILI  which gives me 2 silver palate choices.  Searching the same title with CHILLI gets me 1 hit (the one I wanted) and searching the title with CHILE gets me 11 with the 1st hit being the CHILLI I was looking for :)

averythingcooks the best way to search for the type of "chili" recipe you're looking for -- i.e., the stew dish that usually incorporates beans, tomatoes, chiles/chillies and/or chile/chilli powder, and often meat -- is to use the Filter By categories in the right-hand sidebar, where you'll see "Chili" under Recipe Types/Dish types. You can combine the Chili filter with keyword/ingredient searches, or any of the other filters under Ethnicity, Nutrition, Occasion, etc., to narrow your search. Using the Chili filter gets around how chili/chilli/chile might be spelled in the recipe title when it's referring to the stew and not the hot peppers.

There are a pethora of these... and they aren't necessarily localized between the different editions of cookbooks.

Whisky - Whiskey

Cilantro - Coriander Leaves

Rocket - Arugula

Eggplant - Aubergine

Zucchini - Courgette

Scallion - Green Onion

Chickpeas - Garbanzo Beans

Hazelnuts - Filberts

Hazelnut and filbert seem to be pretty much interchangeable - though in my part of the world (SE England) they're usually called cobnuts.

Cilantro, arugula and zucchini are just the Italian names for what we in England call coriander leaves, rocket and courgette (the french name)

Scallions are normally called spring onions in England - the word scallion shares its roots with the word shallot back to the port of Ashkelon now in Israel

Garbanzo is just the Spanish for chickpea

And while Whiskey only seems to be made in Ireland and the USA, Whisky is made all over the world - most famously in Scotland

But the whole chilli/chili/chile is endlessly confusing! I tend to use chilli for the dish, the fruit and the powdered spice, though my mother always called the powder cayenne or even cayenne pepper and that seems to be quite common in England

Fyretigger - another reason why EYB is so useful is that we link all the different names for ingredients so a search by one shows all the results for the other.
