Just curious - when are cookbook editions linked?   Go to last post Go to last unread

I like the feature of linking multiple versions (hardback, paperback ...) together. I know that they are not automatically linked when editions are added - that would hardly be possible. But when are they linked - when a book is assigned for indexing, when it is indexed, ...? Just curious as I've not yet figured out the pattern.

Editions are linked when the book is assigned for indexing. We try to catch new editions that come through later and link them but that is not always possible given the sheer volume of cookbooks added weekly to the EYB Library. If any member ever spots that they own an edition that should be linked to an indexed book, they should email us and we will link it. This may especially apply to eBook editions that in some cases came out several years after the print editions.

Sorry if this is obvious, but how can I tell if editions are linked?

There are two ways to see linked editions. On the Books tab on your Bookshelf or in the EYB Library there is a row of small icons under each book listing (the last row). I may be going into too much detail on this explanation but it may well help other members.

book icons

  1. The first check/tick mark Bookshelf shows the book is on your Bookshelf. If it is not you see a blue button +Bookshelf. When you hover over the check/tick you see a popup "Remove" - this is how to take a book off your Bookshelf.

  2. The stars show the ratings for that book. If you hover over you see your own rating (if you have added one).

  3. The people icon shows the number of EYB members who have this book on their Bookshelf. Clicking the icon takes you to the Bookshelves tab on the book details page.

  4. The speech bubble shows the number of Notes members have added for this book and its recipes. Clicking the icon takes you to the Notes tab on the book details page.

  5. The links icon shows the number of different editions that are linked to this indexed master edition. Clicking the icon will show a list of the linked editions - ISBN, format, country and date of pub. You can then click the ISBN for your own edition so you can add the one you own to your Bookshelf.

  6. The TV screen icon shows there is a video for this book. There are 415 book videos and 5,481 recipe videos on EYB - there are filters for each.

  7. Finally, the last shows the index status of the book - Indexed, Indexing Now, Index requested (you have placed a request for the book) or Request Index (you can ask EYB to index the book or volunteer to index it yourself).

The other way to view the linked editions is from the book details page of the indexed master edition (the one you see on the Library listing). On the Details tab is a list of the linked editions.

linked books

If you own a linked edition, at the top on the book details page you will see a links icon after the book title - if you click that it will show which indexed master edition the book is linked to.

Thanks - I'd never noticed the link icon in the title - your last example.

Thanks so much Jane!

Did not know about link or the video buttons.  Thank you Jane.

I didn't know about this either ... now going through and checking my ebooks as I've probably lazily linked to the first option that appears for a book.

FJT - that is probably true of many members!

We have a problem with adding eBooks to the EYB Library. For some odd reason Amazon does not list the ISBN on their eBook listings and as we use Amazon for our data imports and as the ISBN is the unique edition identifier, we are unable to import data for eBooks. We don't have the resources to add all this data manually. Amazon also would not list eBook editions for other platforms they do not own such as Kobo and Nook, each of which will have a different ISBN number.

In the past we imported book data from Nielsen who did supply eBook data so that is why you will see older eBooks listed. Please do let us know if you ever come across eBooks that should be linked to an indexed print book.

It's possible in the future this may change – either because we get another source we can import data from or because we add a feature that allows members to add their own book data (this is on our development to-do list).

For now I suggest that you set up a Bookmark eBooks that you apply to all the print books you add to your Bookshelf that you actually own the eBook for. Then when searching for recipes you can filter the results to just see those you own digitally.

:: Amazon does not list the ISBN on their eBook listings ::

That is truly bizarre. I can't imagine a good reason why they wouldn't.

The Kindle deal posts have allowed me to add a good number of books on my wishlist over the last year or two, so a while ago I created a Bookmark of the kind Jane suggests. I hadn't noticed that in many cases there isn't a linked e-book, as I've usually chosen with printed books to add to my Bookshelf the primary, indexed version, regardless of which version I actually have. (Among other reasons, it avoids anomalies when viewing one's own books sorted by popularity.)

Just an FYI - Amazon does sometimes provide the ISBN of the print edition that the eBook page numbers are taken from.  This may be the best edition to link to.

Can I have a couple of books linked please?

https://www.eatyourbooks...62/herbs-for-all-seasons

needs to have

https://www.eatyourbooks...37/herbs-for-all-seasons

linked to it. The first one above is the original Australian book. The image that is associated with the second book also applies to the first (which has no image).

EmmaJaneDay, we don't normally link books in the Library until they're assigned for indexing, either to a pro or to a member-indexer. There are several reasons for this, among them: (1) if we have to unlink books down the road when we discover they're not identical, it can create issues with the books' indexing status; and (2) linking tends to "hide" the linked editions in the Library, which can be confusing for new members looking for the particular edition of a title they own, as it was for the OP of this topic. When we assign a book for indexing, we take pains to make sure that all identical editions (for indexing purposes) are linked to the "master" edition being indexed so that the indexed recipes will be accessible to anyone who owns any edition.

The exception to the rule is eBooks; since we can't designate an eBook as the indexing "master" if a print edition exists, we do link eBooks to their print counterparts when we discover them. But as Jane explained previously, linking eBooks is problematic due to the absence of ISBN data on Amazon for digital books.

English Traditional Recipes: A Heritage of Food & Cooking by Annette Yates was recently member indexed. I have a different edition of this book where the recipes match the edition indexed. There are multiple editions of this book in the library. Are these candidates for being linked to the indexed edition?

vglong29, thanks for spotting those other editions, which are now linked to the indexed ISBN.

Deborah, in looking at this book more closely, I realized that the edition I have has a slightly different title, England's Heritage Food and Cooking: A Classic Collection Of 160 Traditional Recipes From This Rich And Varied Culinary Landscape, Shown In 750 Beautiful Photographsby Annette Yates. I see there are two other similar editions that start with England's Heritage Food and Cooking but have slightly different sub-titles.

The cover pictures of my edition match those of English Traditional Recipes: A Heritage of Food & Cooking, which is why I noticed the book when it was indexed. I compared the recipes in mine to those in the indexed book, and they all match.

Since the titles are slightly different, does that mean that England's Heritage Food and Cooking won't be linked to English Traditional Recipes? If that's the case, I'll change what I have on my bookshelf so I have the recipes included in my searches.

vglong29, the linking is done by ISBN, not by title, so if your edition is one of the ISBNs linked to the indexed edition of English Traditional Recipes, then the indexed recipes are already searchable across all the linked editions. But it sounds like we might need to recatalog some/all of those linked edition titles to read "England's Heritage Food and Cooking" and replace the cover images to match. I'll try to sort them out but might need to email you directly for info about your edition.

So if I understand the thread, linked editions would automatically be indexed if the master is indexed? I noticed there is a second edition of Taste of Persia by Naomi Duguid with a different ISBN that says it is unindexed. ISBNs are identical for the first 9 numbers then the unindexed version ends in 7277 instead of 5488. It is on a couple bookshelves.

Barb_N, thanks for spotting that unlinked edition. I've now linked it to the indexed ISBN, so the indexed recipes are searchable by whoever owns either edition.
