Yesterday, we got a box of new acquisitions. It was like Christmas a week early! noew to the shelves are:

The Bali Cookbook

The Bread baker's apprentice

Arak and mezze

The Arab table

and a couple that aren't in EYB's database:

The Onion cookbook, by Brian Glover

African and Middle Eastern cookbook by Jenni Fleetwood and co-author

In a few days, I am starting a two week vacation. Any ideas what I will be doing?

Ah, so excited!  I just picked up three new ones at Half Price Books today:

The Greens Cookbook by Deborah Madison and Edward Espe Brown - So excited to read through this one.  I've heard it's a challenging cookbook but with worthwhile results.  A few years ago I found a recipe for the roasted eggplant noodles on Orangette's blog and it's one of my favorite summer meals.  Any other life changing recipes in here I should know about?

Classic Indian Cooking by Julie Sahni - I've cooked from Madhur Jaffrey but this is my first Julie Sahni book, and I've heard that this book is really excellent.  I know that 143 of you out there own the book also, so if anyone out there has made anything especailly delicious to recommend to me, I'd love to hear your two cents!

Chocolate and the Art of Low Fat Desserts by Alice Medrich - I first heard about this book when I was about 17 and everyone in the blogosphere was marveling at the incredible results from this now out-of-print book...and now it's mine!  Ahem, can't wait for this one to be indexed, cough cough, wink wink.

So some of the books I mentioned in an earlier post didn't make their way to my house.  The box was sitting on my front steps in pieces.  It was very upsetting and the book seller only had two of the missing books still in stock.  BUT... I was able to find two more of the missing books on other sites for similar prices and ordered them AND THEN Amazon had a sale on two other books I was looking at and those two arrived yesterday!  I am now the proud owner of The French Laundry Cookbook and Ad Hoc at Home.  I'm incredibly intimidated by The French Laundry Cookbook, but I think Ad Hoc is going to be used quite frequently.  I showed my fiance some of the first section and he's really excited by it! :)  Can't wait to sit down and read them, then attempt some of the recipes!

Happy Holidays!

Hi,

I am new to EYB- just joined up last week. I as wondering which stores are your fav online for cookbooks- i mainly buy from amazon and book depository. Wondering where some of you in the above thread got your new acquisitions as some appear to be second hand/ out of print. Would appreciate tips on new places to try shopping online

I am so happy to have found EYB is already proven its weight in gold to me even in the short time i have been a member.

I like to browse discount and used book stores much more than shopping online.  Perhaps it's an age thing, but I grew up before there was an 'online', and just love poking around on the bookshelves in crowded, musty, old bookstores.  I used to shop at the original Borders in Ann Arbor, MI when it was just a small used book store.

However, when I do order online, it's usually from Jessica's Biscuit - AKA ecookbooks.com.  I like that they have an actual 800 number that you can call with questions.  Someone actually answers the phone, and they actually give you answers!!!  Everything is discounted.  Their prices are similar to Amazon, sometimes even better.  They have an entire section of closeouts that turns up some great gems.

YMMV.

While cleaning upa filing cabinet, we found some old photocopies of recipes from books checked out of the library. In looking at them again, it seemed like a good idea to get some of those books.

So not exactly new, but new on our shelves:

Cooking Caribe, by Christopher Idone

An herb and spice cook book, by Craig Claiborne

Roots: the underground cookbook, by Barbara Grunes and Anne Elise Hunt

Hollyhocks and radishes, by Bonnie Stewart Mickelson

Another one I got recently and am anxious to have the time to delve into is Andrea Nguyen's Asian Dumplings

I got a wonderful cookbook recommendation from the blog of Shuna Fish Lydon, a well known pastry chef who was recently featured on videos by Food52.  Even though she is not a Southerner, she was using the recipe for Real Cornbread from Shuck Beans, Stack Cakes and Honest Fried Chicken: The Heart and Soul of Southern Country Kitchens, by Ronnie Lundy.  She praised the book as one of her favorites that she got out when she felt depressed.  So I had to have the book.

It is indeed wonderful.  The author lives in Louisville KY and has made a career writing about bluegrass music.  She found that when she interviewed musicians like Dolly Parton, Chet Atkins, and many more, conversations almost always turned to Southern country cooking.  And along with the cooking came the tales connected with Southern living.  Mainly the recipes are from home cooks in Tennessee and Kentucky.  Since my parents were born and raised in TN and I in AR, I know many of these recipes well. My mother could wring a chicken's neck with one flick of her wrist.

So if you were raised right, can't tolerate sugar in your cornbread and know how to string beans while sitting on the porch listening to women talk and talk, you will enjoy this book.

A further few new (mostly used) ones from the bookstore today:

I love macarons by Hisako Ogita -- Even if I never make the perfect macaron, it is a beautiful book. And indexed here, too.

Stir-frying to the sky's edge by Grace Young -- also indexed here. I checked this out of the library in my quest to improve my wok skills and when I saw it used for half price today, it had to come home with me. The growing season is just beginning here, so I think the outdoor wok burner and I are going to get a lot of practice soon.

Greek cooking: traditional recipes by T. Tolis -- not indexed here, but hard to pass up for 3 dollars.

Retro baking by Maureen Fischer -- What can I say? I have a special fondness for the types of recipes I grew up seeing in my mother's annual Pillsbury Bake-Off collections. This one also isn't indexed here.

New for me is Denis Cotter's For the love of food. It's his latest vegetarian cookbook, described as 'vegetarian recipes from the heart;. Denis gave a demonstration recently and the recipes look amazing. He's really focused on sourcing local, well-produced ingredients and cooking what's in season. Check it out!
