Starting with my 2021 Christmas gifts, I’ve been going through my cookbooks and bookmarking on EYB the recipes I want to or have made. I was looking for my next wok adventure in J. Kenji Lopez Alt’s ‘The Wok’, but when I go to My Books->Books, and click on that book (which displays all the recipes in that book), “My Bookmarks” shows “No bookmarks added yet”. I tried several other books I’ve added bookmarks to, with the same results.

So… am I misunderstanding what “My Bookmarks” on a book page is supposed to show? How would I see my bookmarks in a specific book?

My undertstanding of bookmarks is that to see recipes you've bookmarked, you'd have to go to the book, then search this book for recipes, then filter by bookmarks & select the bookmark you want to look for. But I could be wrong ;-)

There are two types of bookmarks - for books and for recipes. If you click the Bookmarks link under the My Bookshelf tab you will see all the bookmarks you have added, for both books and recipes. Click on the bookmark folder to see all the books/recipes you have tagged.

If you just want to see a bookmark added for recipes in one book, enter the book title in your Bookshelf Recipes search. Then select the bookmark you are interested in, e.g. "I want to cook this". Now you see all the recipes listed that you have tagged.

Please do give more details if that doesn't achieve what you want.

That didn't work for me at first, so I put my software engineer's cap on and started QA testing. I found there is bug or limitation with search, it can't handle semicolons (and probably other special characters, though I didn't test that). So if you search on the book title "The Wok: Recipes and Techniques", you get zero results. If you search on "The Wok", you get the recipes in that book, plus every recipe containg the words "the wok". While not ideal, it's sufficient, since I can then filter with bookmarks. Unfortunately, I do have to remember that it doesn't like semicolons.

Thanks for the assistance.

Oddly this issue has never come up before in our more than 12 years of operation. Probably because the colon is not really necessary in a word search. But I have passed this over to our developers to investigate. I found that the semicolon ";" and "&" and "!" all worked OK.

Another search method: to search for all the recipes in one book, type both the first part of the book title (before the subtitle) and the part of author's name.  When I search my recipes for just "Wok", I get 310 recipes from several cookbooks. When I search "Wok Lopez" or Wok Kenji" (because I also own J. Kenji Lopez-Alt's The Wok), I get the 298 recipes in that book. You can then filter for your bookmarks -- "I've cooked this", "I want to cook this", or your unique bookmarks.

You can also just search the "recipes" tab for the authors name, if you want all their recipes that you own (because you might have several books by the same author).

I should know better than to write posts late at night when I’m I tired. Everywhere I said ‘semicolon’ I meant ‘colon’. Thankfully my English teacher SIL is not on here or I never would have heard the end of it.

Jane, I suspect the reason it never came up before is that when I didn’t get the results I wanted on the first try, my software engineer brain kicked in and I over-thought things — ‘I will put in the entire literal title’.

Adding ‘Kenji’ to the search never even occurred to me, even though I went back through the Bookmark tutorial before I wrote my original post. My apologies for that and my thanks to Ikgrover for pointing that out to me.

I need to start using Book level Bookmarks more. I have enough titles that are digital and poor enough memory, that it would be useful to label ‘location’. And as mentioned I’m going through books and tagging recipes as “Want to cook” or “Cooked” and it would be good to mark which books I’ve actually reviewed.

Thanks again for the help.

I also have a bunch...a big bunch...of Kindle titles.  I give each one a "kindle" location bookmark.  Since I am looking at 150 "on sale" titles I've added, I am now bookmarking them with 2 ID's.  Bookmark Kindle, and now bookmarking Kindle plus Baking, compendiums, preserving, etc.

Interesting! I guess this is a workaround for the problem I posted recently about not being able to sort my bookmarks by book. I am wanting to check off in pencil in the actual book the recipes I have made already. This would be an ok method for books that I have cooked out of a lot. I have nearly 700 recipes tagged as "keepers" now and want to check them all off in the physical book. I do wish there was a way of filtering the search in my keepers folder though by book or to exclude the online recipes I have saved to that folder. At least this workaround will work for the books I have cooked out of the most though!
