The season brings on soup cooking for me. I often make green Chile chicken soup, lentil soup, butternut squash bisque, bean soup, and lots of different chili. I'd like to try some new soup recipes. What are some of your favorite soup cookbooks, especially those tried and true ones?

Love Soup by Anna Thomas is very good, and I make a lot of her soups from her other books.

I'm fond of the recently-indexed (but not new) Soup Night by Maggie Stuckey.  It is a collection of favorite recipes from people around the country who hold soup nights for gatherings of friends and family, and it includes things to go with soup.  Arranged by season.  Photos of many but not all of the soups, and the recipes are delicious.

The New England Soup Factory Cookbook is my favorite! We've cooked so many of the recipes many times over. I'm eyeing a new one for this upcoming week to use some leftover leeks and potatoes I have - Porcini Mushroom Soup!

Twelve Months of Monastery Soups has been my go to soup cookbook for years. I like the way it is organized seasonally to make use of what is available (I'm in the Northeast, near where Brother Antoine's Monastery is located) and back when I was first learning to cook it was a great help for making basic broths and hearty meals on a budget.

Crescent Dragonwagon's Dairy Hollow House Soup and Bread Cookbook.  "The Soup" is a blessing for anyone short on time.  You make "The Soup" from a fairly loose and general recipe(more of a technique) and then add the protein and carb of your choice each time you have a bowl.  So a week of variety.  Also a lot of just great soups.

I also love Soups for all Seasons.  I haven't made as many of these.  Some of the ingredients are out of my price range or so unlikely to be available.  But oh, my, the soups I have made!  Caribbean Pepper Pot is great and I highly recommend it.

My favorite is still Soup's On by Nancy Baggett and Ruth Glick. It is an old favorite from 1985 with no frills and no photos like old cookbooks used to be. The Belgian Waterzooi is my favorite, but the cauliflower leek potage, Vichysoise and West African curried chicken soup are great too. All in all 200 delicious soups.

2 Canadian titles that I love are For the Love of Soup by Jenelle Mitchell and The Soup Sisters Cookbook edited by Sharon Hapton (with recipes contributed by members of the Soup Sisters group and also many well known Canadian food personalities).

I love the soups in Moosewood Restaurant Daily Special. The tomato soup recipe has become my family's favorite.

Vegetable Soups from Deborah Madison's Kitchen is a great little book. Published in 2006.

I love Lindsay Bareham's Celebration of Soup. It is encyclopedic (556 recipes according to EYB), with classifications according to heartiness, various embelishment and base stock recipes and really good geographical range. I've cooked at least 40 of the recipes with lots that have gone on regular repeat and only one fail; a chestnut soup that went very gloopy.

I love Ken Haedrich's Soup Makes the Meal, which has seasonal menus that each have a soup, bread, and salad. It's one of my favorite and most used cookbooks. (I like it enough that I'm in the process of indexing it now!) It has both simple weeknight soups (the Italian spinach and rice soup is one I make frequently) to more complex dishes like cream of chicken soup with dumplings. The soup, bread, and salad recipes are all equally good.

Soup Suppers by Arthur Schwartz from 1994 is a great one with soups that run the geographical gamut along with recipes & recommendations for accompaniments. No photos but the recipes are solid & the ingredients accessible.
