Something that makes me happy after member-indexing a book   Go to last post Go to last unread

Wasn't sure where exactly to post this, but I figured feedback was best since it's about happy things with EYB.

I noticed this past week that a title I just finished member-indexing and had approved has jumped up in the number of bookshelves its listed on by a good number. It makes me wonder, did people decide to check out the title (either purchasing it or borrowing it from a library) after seeing the recipes listed and some of the comments left on them? If so, that's a happy possibility. I try to pick books I really love to index because not only do I want to use them more myself but encourage others to check them out.

So that's another great reason to index if you have the time - to encourage others to explore certain books you know are good and might otherwise get overlooked.

So, now I'm wondering- which book did you just index? My moratorium on cookbook buying has already gone out the window so I'd like to check it out. ;)

nicolepellegrini - I don't want to rain on your parade of enjoying the results of your member indexing, but I think the more likely reason for the jump is that many EYB members have not added all their books they own to their Bookshelf.  Then when they see a book appearing at the top of the Library list (since it has just been indexed) they think "Oh yes, I own that one" and click the +Bookshelf button.

But I would love to hear from members whether that is the case or whether they are tempted to buy a book when they see it has been indexed.

Hi Jane and Nicolepellegrini,

I always check whether a book has been indexed before I buy it. I have a lot of maybe-to-buy books so it's great to see what kind of recipes are actually in the book before I decide to buy it. If it's a book a definetely want to buy, then the fact if it's indexed does not influence my decision, I'll index it myself.

I'm also hoping other people will notice the books I index, they are usually locally published somewhat low profile cookbooks.

with an author I don't know, I always check EYB index status before purchase; not so with authors I know (and love).

Nicole, big thanks for member-indexing books. I sincerely appreciate you and other members that index books here. Some of my favourite titles have been indexed by EYB members.

I too take whether a book has been indexed into account when making purchasing decisions. In fact, I have an Amazon Wishlist of books I won't buy until I have an opportunity to look at them in person or they are indexed here. Many older books aren't in bookstores so for those, the EYB index is especially important. If a book is indexed in EYB I know I'm much likelier to cook from it as I plan my meals and menus using EYB. I can justify the purchase if I know I will cook from the book. Conversely, I have some awesome older books on my shelves that aren't being used because they aren't indexed so this strengthens my resolve to ensure books are indexed before I add them in future. I have a large collection and 45% of it is unindexed. Unfortunately my work schedule is so demanding I don't have time to index my books. I wish it were possible to pay a fee in EYB to get a book indexed as I'd be willing to make the investment for some of my older books.

I also take my iPad to used book stores and Thrift shops with me for the same reason. I take into account how many members own the book and of course, any member feedback.

I wouldn't say I choose to buy a book based on whether it has been indexed, but it has tipped the scale sometimes if I am choosing between a few options or if I am on the fence about buying it at all.

Like Barb, I also wanna know which book Nicole indexed!

My guess is that Nicole indexed Luca Manfe's My Italian Kitchen.  [I looked down the recently indexed list, checking the Member Indexed ones for the list of members having them on their shelves; that was the first one that include Nicole among its holders.]

Good sleuthing, ellabee!  I checked our list of Member Indexed books, and My Italian Kitchen was the last book nicolepellegrini has member indexed.
