We are experiencing some site slowness and are working on resolving this issue.

The EYB site is getting hit hard by search crawler bots who send thousands of requests per second. Our developers are working on ways to block them. Our apologies. We appreciate your patience. 8/5/2023 - 10 am MST

The issues now seem to be resolved.

I've noticed this is happening more and more. Is there a specific reason?

#4 Posted : Friday, July 7, 2023 1:43:21 AM(UTC)

There has been a big increase in bot activity on the site - not necessarily negative, more from search engines. This improves the site's SEO ranking and therefore helps cooks find EYB when looking for a recipe. However the negative is that the hundreds of thousands of requests from bots slows down the site for actual users, to the extent that sometimes it almost grinds to a halt. Our developers are looking into ways to limit this bot traffic. This will reduce our prominence on search engine results, but will improve performance for our members, which is more important.

I've been noticing it for the last week or couple of weeks, but it's great at the moment. Thanks for the update!

Couldn’t get on all day yesterday. Still seems slow today.

I’m in the UK and the site is barely working. Second day that I’ve experienced this. 😞

Taken a minute to get to the reply box after clicking the "Post Reply" button!

I know it is not my connection as a) I have a full fibre connection and b) all other sites are giving me instant reposnses.

Took forever to get to this page, but wanted to share that the site is completely unusable. It was suuuuuuper slow loading this page and other pages are so slow that they're giving me an error message.

Yesterday I got in in the afternoon, but couldn't post a review.  It is still extremely slow this morning.  It is Saturday morning in Seattle.

Site performance has now greatly improved but we apologize that this is happening again. The reason again is search crawler bots inundating the site with thousands of queries per second. Our developers' solution, at least in the short term, is to require sign-in to access any part of the site with search. This may be a slight inconvenience for members and a bigger inconvenience for anyone coming to the site for the first time from a search engine, but it will improve the site performance for all users. We are looking into better long-term solutions.

Sadly no it hasn't. Took over one minute to display your comment and a further minute for quote to work. Anticipate that it will take as long for my reply to get posted.

Not dealing with this slowness.  Staying away for a week and see what happens.

Was locked out from 8am until now by some kind of server error. Glad to see the site back! Really helps planning the weekly menu.

Agree with the post from ThePatheticBaker.  Still very slow to navigate the site.

FYI, I've been unable to add any books to the EYB library for the last 24 hours. After hitting Save, an error message comes up and all the information I've just input disappears from the screen.

Had a gander at ROBOTS.TXT and the format of the file looks okay. But it makes me wonder whether this current slowdown of the site is not an excess of web crawlers but a determined DDOS (Distributed Denial Of Service) attack instigated possibly by the Korean-based spammers — who thankfully appear to have given up posting or been excluded. If it is a DDOS then the problem needs to be escalated to your service provider who should have better resources for dealing with the situation.
