Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Tennessee Honey hot tea

    • IowanCorn on November 26, 2025

Having my first chest cold for the Fall/Winter, and short of cough syrup, I decided to give this a try. I'd been drinking English Breakfast tea anyway, and added the Tablespoon of JD whiskey with a dollop of honey since it wasn't Tennessee honey. It was tasty, and while the cough didn't go completely away, I was more comfortable this afternoon. A nice warm drink on a foggy cold day.

  • Ham hash brown potato bake

    • IowanCorn on December 28, 2024

Extremely easy, quick, tasty and all around good recipe. It reminded me of Midwestern hot dish, only for brunch instead of dinner, and a good way to use up leftover ham. This will be on the repeat list, especially if I have ham to use up.

  • Cast iron cornbread

    • IowanCorn on March 01, 2026

I used a self-rising cornmeal/flour mix which made this an incredibly quick recipe to put together. A very light cornbread, it went well with beef stew. I can see using this if you don't have a lot of time to bake, but really need a skillet of cornbread for supper.

  • Game day sweet potato muffins

    • IowanCorn on May 24, 2024

These are excellent! A nice use of sweet potatoes, a not too sweet muffin, and the only change I'd do is to make sure the nuts are cut small enough to cover the top more nicely.

  • Creole red and green beans

    • IowanCorn on July 17, 2024

Made a half a recipe, since that's all the green beans I had from my CSA, and it worked really well. I did need to add a little water while the tomatoes were cooking because I didn't want them to dry out and burn. The beans and the tomato veg sauce was really tasty, and with minimum seasoning - just salt, pepper and bacon grease, the vegetables really shone out without being overpowered. This is definitely a repeater.

  • Creamy hominy spinach casserole

    • Amycado on December 15, 2024

Husband and I are low-key giddy when I put this on the menu - its one of our favorite things. Other guests aren't quite as excited about it as we are, but enjoy it nonetheless.

  • Dry county cabbage casserole

    • IowanCorn on July 04, 2024

This is an excellent recipe! I subbed Swiss cheese for the cheddar because that's the type of cheese I had and it worked wonderfully. I also used half the cabbage because the Savory cabbage I had only made 6 cups, but kept the pepper and onion the same . It wasn't as good as leftovers so eat it the day it's made.

  • Slow-simmered marinated chuck roast

    • IowanCorn on April 20, 2026

An easy flavorful slow cook recipe, well worth repeating. The whiskey gives a subtle under note to the flavor.

  • Crocked barbecue

    • IowanCorn on July 17, 2024

It was okay, I guess. The alcohol and the cider vinegar - which I used a cider vinegar which I had infused hot pepper flakes and garlic - were the major flavoring, and both of them mellowed out, a bit too much in my opinion, as it cooked. It does make a lot, so if you have a crowd coming, this will meet the need. I would punch up the spice, though.

  • Pumpkin patch squares

    • IowanCorn on November 03, 2025

These are delicious! The icing is a thicker layer for my liking, but these are easy enough to make for family, and fancy enough to bring to potluck and company gatherings. The cinnamon is forward, but doesn't drown out the pumpkin flavor.
