Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Skillet biscuits

    • nutrica6 on December 25, 2024

Great basic recipe. The biscuits had a nice texture and rise. I love the cast iron skillet because it really crisps the bottom of the biscuits. I found they needed 20min in the oven instead of 15, and didn't brown much on the tops. Maybe try putting them on a higher oven rack next time. I did not grease the cast iron, which was fine. I also did not preheat the cast iron in the oven.

  • Baked eggs with fresh herbs and Parmigiano-Reggiano

    • nutrica6 on December 26, 2024

I like this dish. The sauce is almost sweet from the vermouth and the eggs are nice and runny with texture variation from the breadcrumbs. The idea of serving with toast and tomatoes/Mayo was perfect too.

  • Broccoli salad

  • Dixie’s famous chicken salad

    • Amycado on January 06, 2025

It wasn't necessarily bad, but no one enjoyed it. The chicken was lost amongst all of the other stuff and it was too busy. For better or worse, it makes a LOT.

  • Red rind pimento cheese

    • jimandtammyfaye on November 18, 2021

Nicely balanced. Great for sandwiches or crackers.

  • Sriracha coleslaw

    • Yildiz100 on April 27, 2020

Made this but did not refrigerate overnight. Eyeballed some of the quantities. Delicious!

  • Dixie’s sweet potato casserole with marshmallows and coconut crumble

    • jimandtammyfaye on November 18, 2021

Outstanding, although more dessert than vegetable. I usually halve the crumble ingredients. To freeze: bake casserole w/o toppings before freezing. Defrost in fridge 24 hours, add toppings, and bake until bubbly.

  • Southwestern beef casserole

    • Amycado on January 06, 2025

It wasn't bad, but it was boring made as written. Top comments around the table were how much they liked the shredded iceberg lettuce with it. So.. decent comfort food, but I don't make it again.

  • Grillades

    • jimandtammyfaye on November 18, 2021

Hearty and flavorful with a kick. Decrease liquids (broth/wine) by 1 cup total.

Reviews about this book

  • Boston Globe by T. Susan Chang

All in all, I’d hoped for more...I still feel a real affection for the cookbook, even though I probably won’t use it again. I guess that’s the power of a good story.

...a farm-to-table restaurant and grocery store in rural Mississippi, peppers the cookbook (the recipes are from her chef Dixie Grimes) with tales of other entrepreneurial pioneers in the deep South.

Publishers Text

Locals go to the B.T.C. Old-Fashioned Grocery in Water Valley, Mississippi, for its Skillet Biscuits and Sausage Gravy breakfasts, made-to-order chicken salad and spicy Tex-Mex Pimiento Cheese sandwiches, and daily specials like Shrimp and Grits that are as good as momma made. The B.T.C.’s freezers are stocked with take-home Southern Yellow Squash Casseroles and its counter is piled high with sweets like Peach Fried Pies as well as seasonal produce, local milk, and freshly baked bread.

“Be the Change” has always been the store’s motto, and that’s just what it has done. What started as a place to meet and eat is now so much more, as the grocery has become the heart of a now-bustling country town. The B.T.C. Old-Fashioned Grocery Cookbook shares 120 of the store’s best recipes, giving home cooks everywhere a taste of the food that brought a community together, sparking friendships, reviving traditions, and revitalizing an American Main Street.
