Notes about this book

Every recipe I have tried out of this book has been an absolute winner. I have so many cookbooks that somehow I had almost forgotten this one and yet in rediscovering it in my collection I have realised that 5 of our high rotation main meals originated from this little gem. It's inspired me to cook from it more this winter.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Tarragon chicken with 40 garlic cloves

    • joneshayley on May 22, 2019

Cooked as per oven instructions which resulted in a perfect roast chicken with a delicious fragrant aroma.

  • Best ever meatloaf

    • Sparkles75 on May 10, 2019

We love this meatloaf, it's on high rotation in winter and the sauce is simple but delicious. I only bake it in the oven as I find the texture much nicer with crispy edges however it is still nice enough out of slow cooker if no other option. I have also made the sauce with sugar free fake maple syrup and the taste is practically the same if watching sugars/carbs is an issue.

  • Ultimate Bolognese

    • Sparkles75 on May 10, 2019

This has become our go-to Bolognese. It's very tasty and more importantly, easy.

  • Pulled pork

    • Sparkles75 on June 01, 2019

Really delicious and pulled pork recipe made in the slow cooker and served with home made buns. Yum.

  • Greek chicken soup with rice and lemon

    • joneshayley on January 07, 2019

Lovely recipe - added salt as recipe calls for none, but the broth is bland without. Rice took longer to cook, but that would vary depending on packets. The chicken poaches beautifully, easy to shred and so tender! The lemon and dill added at the end give a fragrant special finish to the soup.

  • Pork, apple and cider pie

    • Sparkles75 on May 10, 2019

This has become one of hubby's very favourite meals. Good comfort food.

  • Beef short rib poutine

    • joneshayley on May 22, 2019

This is a wonderful recipe - soothing, unctuous, flavourful. The gravy is perfect, thick and silky, the ribs are soft and melt in the mouth, the potatoes crispy and soft. A perfect , if sinful, meal.

  • Sweet and sticky pork ribs

    • joneshayley on February 01, 2019

Wonderful recipe. The glaze is utterly delicious, spicy and sticky, sweet but not cloying. Made in the oven, timings are perfect and I ended with soft fall off the bone, delicious meat. Yum

  • Swedish meatballs

    • Sparkles75 on June 01, 2019

Very easy and delicious in the slow cooker. One of my little boys favourites in winter

  • Ginger and spring onion chicken

    • joneshayley on November 14, 2017

Nice- the contrast between the fairly bland broth and the very spicy sauce is good. I’d halve the water added- it would intensify the flavour and make sure that you cook for no more than the stated time- slow cooked chicken can get stringy or worse, fall apart. Sauce can be made in a pestle and mortar instead of food processor

  • Pork cheeks braised in coconut water

    • joneshayley on April 01, 2019

Great recipe - the coconut water and spices impenetrate the pork cheeks, rendering them soft and delicious, full of warmth and flavour. Add in fresh herbs, slippery rice noodles and spiced broth, and this is a perfect easy midweek dinner.

  • Lentils with chard, dill and feta

    • k.a.g on April 25, 2025

I was surprised how well this did mimic the flavour of bacon. Quite good, a bit sweet for my taste, but obviously that’s easy to adjust.

  • Lamb biryani

    • Sparkles75 on May 10, 2019

Very delicious. This has become another of hubby's favourite meals
