Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Honey bean soup (Miyan wake)

    • jenburkholder on February 01, 2022

This was okay, but not my favorite. I used black-eyed peas, and they didn't really dissolve completely when blended, so it left a bit of a gritty texture that I didn’t care for. The flavor was nice, though. I added collard greens and served plain (no rice).

  • Groundnut stew with sweet potato

    • jenburkholder on May 05, 2022

Very tasty, comes together well. We cut down the cayenne and it was still plenty spicy for us, used bouillon paste (gluten-free!) instead of a stock cube, and just used pre-roasted peanuts, otherwise made mostly as written. Would repeat and am excited about the leftovers.

  • Stewed greens (Èfó riro)

    • jenburkholder on July 30, 2022

Eh. Needed a lot more liquid to make anything resembling a stew. Used a mix of collard greens and kale. Flavor was fine, but not exciting to me.

Publishers Text

Introducing Zoe Alakija, a London-based cook, whose rich recipes blend modern British flavors with the rich colors and tastes of her Nigerian upbringing. African food in general, and Nigeran food in particular, is on the rise in the UK and dishes like cheesy kokoro and nutty plantain brownies take European vegan food far beyond the more muted flavors and colors that we are used to. Zoe’s immaculate balance of tastes combined with playful presentation ensures these are recipes to remember for those willing to explore broader, more environmentally responsible horizons.
