Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Rich beef & barley soup

    • JKDLady on January 01, 2016

This had too little barley for our taste. I would at least double the amount.

  • Pork & hominy soup

    • rdoose on March 09, 2026

I have made this recipe countless times, and it is always so satisfying. Often I will buy a big pork shoulder roast and make carnitas separately, divide it up and freeze it in portions. When I'm ready for a batch of this soup, I'll take one of those portions out of the freezer.

  • Ham & salsa soup with lime

    • rdoose on March 09, 2026

This will basically taste like whatever salsa you choose.

  • Creamy curried vegetable soup

    • Emblyadell on March 26, 2026

Good taste, but even at 8 ½ hours, overcooked.

  • Beef & borscht stew

    • kbrooks on May 16, 2025

Really tasty stew. I use Chuck steak cut into 1-1/2" cubes rather than stew meat. Use fresh beets, not canned. Peel and seed tomatoes. Chopped carrots rather than shredded. Increased vinegar to 5 tablespoons and brown sugar to 3 tablespoons. If available use 2 teaspoons chopped fresh dill instead of the dried.

  • Spicy beef brisket

    • JKDLady on July 19, 2015

This recipe is mislabeled. It is Spiced Beef Brisket.

  • Country-style ribs & sauce

    • rdoose on April 20, 2026

Subbed cabbage for celery and green peppers.

  • Lamb with spinach & orzo

    • Daltman on February 19, 2023

I made the lamb in the crock pot on 2/18/23 but wasn’t home to complete the meal (spinach/orzo/feta) and it was still delicious! Definitely want to try again as written.

  • German potato salad with kielbasa

    • danibattle on March 25, 2014

Going to try this for tonight but use bratwurst instead of the keilbasa

  • Texas two-step stew

    • rdoose on March 09, 2026

This stew is so simple and flavorful, but the rice mix, in my experience, only needs half the cooking time. It always turns to mush if I follow the directions as written.

  • Orange-beef stir-fry

    • JKDLady on July 19, 2015

This was just average. Kind of boring.

  • Chicken in ale sauce

    • rdoose on March 24, 2026

This is definitely not a “one-dish recipe” as its section claims. It was tasty enough but the scaling of the recipe is super inconvenient—it calls for 12 oz pasta and makes enough sauce for that amount. So you either have to do the math to make it appropriate for a standard 16 oz box of pasta, or have an under-sauced meal. It also only uses 1/3 cup beer (I used the rest to make beer bread) and white wine Worcestershire sauce (I used regular)
