Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Croque madame

    • gamulholland on January 10, 2026

I’d forgotten how rich Croque Madame is! But also delicious. My guys loved it— I wound up giving half of mine to my son, who happily finished it for me. Really tasty.

  • German cucumber salad

    • Hillhan on January 04, 2026

Super yummy! I halved it and it was more than what two people could eat as a side dish.

  • "Goat cheese party" pasta salad

    • gamulholland on December 24, 2025

If you like pickles, you will love this, because it’s pickly. :) Tasty and fresh— people liked it a lot. I’m not a huge pickle person but I have family members who are, and while I enjoyed it, they loved it.

  • Mini dumplings and cheese (Käse spätzle)

    • dbuhler on April 14, 2026

Even though we enjoyed this, I measured the flour by weight and I don't think there is enough of it, which resulted in a very loose batter. We really enjoyed the cheese sauce, however, once it cools it seizes up, so this needs to be served hot. I also made my sauce in a nonstick skillet, so my dumplings didn't get any the caramelized browning she talks about, so next time I would use a different pan.

  • Chicken schnitzel

    • gamulholland on February 22, 2026

This was delicious— really light and delicate. I’d add more salt & pepper but that’s about it.

  • Cali (turkey) meatballs

    • dbuhler on March 30, 2026

I had such high hopes for this recipe, but they totally fell flat... literally. The lack of precise measurement really let this down. The mixture was so liquidy that the meatballs hardly held together and I ended up with shapeless mounds on my sheet tray. There is also no measurement for the salt which is annoying for a raw meat dish. My cottage cheese may have been too watery, so that may have been my issue. I would have loved a brand recommendation for the cottage cheese, and also an exact weight measurement for the avocado. These tasted just okay. If I do try these again I think I will sub the quinoa for panko to see if that would help them keep their shape better.

  • Perfect quinoa

    • dbuhler on March 30, 2026

This was my first time making quinoa and the instructions were sufficient.

  • Tahini dressing

    • dbuhler on March 30, 2026

The flavor of this "dressing" was just okay, and the consistency was very thick. I made it to serve with the Cali meatballls.

Publishers Text

In this new cookbook, Gesine Bullock-Prado invites her fans into her kitchen, where the harvest is local. Whether she’s picked the lettuce from her own garden, visited a farmers’ market, or shopped at the local grocery store, her seasonal cooking is accessible to all readers. Delicious recipes share the page with fan-favorite family stories and tips on growing food, understanding the soil, and more, for aspirational (and actual) gardeners. Bullock-Prado once dreamed of homesteading—living off the land, cooking pies with scavenged berries, keeping bees and savoring the honey, and foraging all things wild—but was not wholly successful. Her hybrid approach is on display here, and she encourages readers to be realistic and celebrate fresh ingredients wherever they were grown. From Zucchini Waffles to Pickled Peaches, Green Mountain Carbonara to Key Lime Ice Cream Pie, Peony Jelly to Preserved Lemons, these are dishes to make time and again.
