Substituted oil for the butter in the buttermilk mixture. Came out fine.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Quick paratha

    • Shewi128 on February 24, 2026

It was a decent shortcut, but I still had to individually roll and cook each paratha. I'd still prefer fresh from scratch flatbreads.

  • Soaked oats three-grain soda bread

    • Orleams on March 18, 2026

Substituted oil for the 4 tablespoons butter added to the buttermilk mixture. Came out just fine.

  • Pecorino "meatballs" in tomato sauce (Pallotte cacio e ova)

    • Orleams on March 20, 2026

The bread balls were excellent. Used whole wheat bread, which was totally not noticeable, and did not cut off the crusts since the bread was pulverized. The problem was the sauce - not enough and wierd. Did use a can of diced tomatoes. If I made it again I think I would use a 28 oz. can of whole tomatoes.

  • Thai-style caramel-braised pork

    • Shewi128 on February 24, 2026

Good recipe--loved the technique of blenderizing the ingredients ahead of time. I'd make again, especially if served with coconut rice.

  • Creamy pinto bean and tomato soup

    • Logan92995 on March 07, 2026

Partially underwhelmed by a dish I had higher expectations for. Can't quite put my finger on it, but something just seemed to be missing form this -- maybe it was my usage of vegetable stock over the proposed chicken stock?

    • Shewi128 on February 24, 2026

Wow, this was surprisingly good! We added red onions, cilantro, monterey jack cheese, and crushed tortilla chips as toppings, and it tasted really good. I'd definitely make this again as an easy pantry-staple weeknight meal.
