Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Vegetable tagine

    • e_ballad on November 25, 2019

I cut the veg to the recipe’s specifications, which correlate with the accompanying photo. You will need to double the cooking time, which has proven to be less than ideal for a school night meal with hungry kiddos wanting to be fed. I concede that it does taste ok, but I’m currently hate-eating this dish & cursing the author’s lack of recipe testing!

  • Cauliflower, currants and pine nuts in brown butter

    • e_ballad on July 06, 2017

Yep, it's not anything revolutionary, but as opposed to cranking up the oven to prepare other versions involving this ingredient combination, this is on the table in less than 10 mins. Winner.

  • Cauliflower and carrot curry

    • Melanie on September 28, 2013

Delicious. Despite containing lots of ingredients this is very easy to put together.

    • e_ballad on August 27, 2020

I was a bit underwhelmed, but I have been spoiled by having so many other great vegetarian curry recipes that use the same core ingredients. It was a bit same-same.

  • Sour cream and chive dressing

    • e_ballad on December 04, 2016

Hate to think how many times this gets made at our place. It's classic flavours done well. Often used as a dressing for warm potato salad or for koftes/wraps. A keeper.

  • Sweet chicken skewers wrapped in prosciutto

    • e_ballad on October 10, 2016

Jam-packed with flavour. The recipe instructions were a bit odd though. I don't think I've ever been asked to cut a chicken breast into 7x pieces before (I cut into 8x). Seven must be his favourite number, as he also wanted 7x pieces per skewer. He must have massive skewers as I could only manage 4x per skewer. The cooking time was also a bit longer than the (you guessed it) 7 mins cooking time indicated.

  • Green olive rolls

    • RosieB on May 02, 2015

These rolls were very easy to make and really tasty. I recommend you try them.

  • Honey biscuits

    • e_ballad on October 16, 2024

I think that these are supposed to be shortbread-like, but even with prolonged cooking time, they simply didn’t cook through. I did leave the dough refrigerated for 48 hours, but the author indicated that this was possible. My ‘short fat roll’ was just under 10cm diameter - maybe this is ‘fatter’ than the author intended.

  • Tomato relish

    • Melanie on September 28, 2013

      A good, all-purpose relish.

  • White bean and sausage soup

    • e_ballad on June 25, 2019

A hearty soup for this cold winter’s day. Tasty & easy to prepare.

  • Maria's roast chicken with parsley butter and cornbread stuffing

    • e_ballad on April 28, 2017

Our gold-standard roast chook recipe. Simply fantastic.

  • Sunday-night meatloaf with sweet onion gravy

    • RosieB on May 02, 2015

This was real comfort food. A great sunday night meal.

  • Curried beef and chunky veg pies

    • e_ballad on October 10, 2020

Essentially a beef mince pie that is flavoured with curry powder/paste, together with a garam masala subrecipe. Ok, but nothing especially memorable.
