Always check the publication for a full list of ingredients. An Eat Your Books index lists the main ingredients and does not include 'store-cupboard ingredients' (salt, pepper, oil, flour, etc.) - unless called for in significant quantity.

    Cook the onions for 2 hours and 15 minutes and in the end thought they should have been browner! Cooked mainly on 4 (out of 10) on my stove. Next time turn the heat up a bit.

    We loved this soup even without the cheesy bread topping (which is my ultimate test of an onion soup). I mistakenly added the Cognac right after the wine (instead of putting some in each bowl when serving) and I would probably just do it "my way" again next time. We ate this “naked” as our main with Barefoot Contessa's cauliflower toasts on the side...a perfect bistro style meal. AND I will likely try the cheesy bread topping for today's lunch bowl.

    Amazing. Rich, rich deliciousness…but be prepared. Browning onions takes forever!

    Oooooo ... this was delicious! This will be my go-to French Onion Soup recipe. The only thing I do differently is cube the bread before topping the soup so when served one doesn’t have to awkwardly cut through the bread with a spoon.
