How to filter for recipes that are only online?   Go to last post Go to last unread

I am probably missing the obvious but I don't see how to look at recipes that are only online - not indexed as part of a book or magazine. Help ....

Don't think you can exclude book & mags that have recipes online, but online recipes only (which will include those that are also in books/mags)  "online recipes" under "library" ;-)

mjes - Deb is correct that you cannot filter out recipes from blogs/websites and exclude those that are online recipes from cookbooks and magazines. I'm not clear why you would want to do that? You can look at the online recipes from any of the 84 blogs, websites and newspaper columns that we index by selecting them on the blogs tab.

Not an answer to mjes' question, but a related note:

When you use the Bookmarklet to add and index an online recipe that will be part of the EYB Library, accessible to all members, there is nothing to mark it as one you indexed.  So it's helpful to make yourself a Bookmark just for that, so you can review recipes you've added as a group (e.g. to find a particular one, or check before adding/indexing a new online recipe whether you previously added a similar one, etc.).   Given that 10% of all the online recipes in the EYB library are added by members, the bookmarking tip might be useful to add to the Help section on using the Bookmarklet.

ellabee - thanks for that suggestion. I have now added a section on bookmarking recipes added with the Bookmarklet. We are always open to adding extra explanations to Help - sometimes we can be too close to the functioning of the site and it helps to get members' input on sections that need further explanation.

To clarify about adding bookmarks to online recipes - when you add a recipe to EYB using the Bookmarklet, there is a Bookmarks field which when clicked will display your own bookmarks.

ellabee - you are thinking much as I have been. I have tagged recipes I entered as "I entered" - obviously showing great creativity. However, I hadn't done this initially so I wanted to scan for recipes I might have missed.Unfortunately the books and blogs add thousands of irrelevant entries. Plus I am often interested in searching only recipes I entered just as I search only books I own.

A side note: I rarely am interested in online recipes for those from books I own because I usually search books first.

mjes - I will send you a list of the online recipes you have added. Usually I would just send a screenshot or two from the list but since you have added 816 recipes I will need to run a report from the server.

That's been a helpful reminder when adding/indexing new online recipes; I also usually take the opportunity to add "regular" bookmarks (mostly ingredient-based).

Thank you very much - sorry to be such a high maintenance user ... but I will get the system figured out :-)

I'd like this ability as well - I've looked for this feature previously. Without it, you can't find easily recipes that are from any blogs that are on your bookshelf, nor any recipes that were added as "one-offs".

What I'd actually like is for an equivalent Blog Recipes option, and an ability to find online recipes on your bookshelf that aren't in the blogs on your bookshelf (e.g. finding a Serious Eats recipe that I've added, even though Serious Eats isn't on my bookshelf).

I hope it's okay to piggyback onto the OP's question as mine is sort of similar. I am wondering if there is a way to have recipes from my cookbooks show before the online ones. I have added a couple blogs that do I like pulling recipes from but I mainly use EYB for searching through my physical cookbooks and it's annoying to have to sort past all the online recipes first. I turn to those when my cookbooks are lacking so I still want them showing in the search but I'm hoping there is a sort order button I'm missing.

If you want to just see your cookbook recipes, use the filter Book Recipes at top right.

No, I want to see both, I just want to be able to change the sort order so that the recipes in books show before the online ones. Honestly if I wanted to search for a recipe online I'd just use google.

So I don't want to narrow the search I want to change the sort order. There is a drop-down for sorting by things like A-Z, author name, publish by date. I would like a books before online recipe search option. After all the site is eat your BOOKS! :)

So, why aren't you making two lists of whatever you are searching for, one for books and one for online recipes, and then read the books list first? You would have all recipes and the ones in books first.

wester's suggestion is a good one to achieve the "sort" you're looking for. And remember that many Book Recipes also have online links -- over 56,000 of the Online Recipes in EYB are from books!

Because I don't want to do two searches, I just want one, but with the books listed first. I don't feel like that's an unreasonable request, but I guess one that isn't possible. I guess I don't understand why a site with BOOKs in the name that is made to catalog your physical books wouldn't make those recipes a priority.

Oh well, thanks. I'll just go back to scrolling past all the online recipes like I've been doing.

SnarkyLane, the problem with trying to sort your searches just on Book Recipes vs. Online Recipes is that they are not mutually exclusive categories in EYB. As I mentioned, many Book Recipes also have a link to the recipe online. Whatever search you're doing in your Bookshelf/Recipes, just set the Only Show...filter to Book Recipes, and all you'll see is recipes from your books. However, some of them may also have online links, so you'll be able to click through to see the actual recipe on a third-party source, which can be helpful if you're away from your physical collection.
