Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Whole wheat, peach and fresh sage scones

    • MirandaAK on July 15, 2023

These scones are wonderful. The whole wheat flour adds a nice texture and nutty flavor, and the fresh sage makes them really special.

  • Oatmeal sandwich cookies with creamy peanut butter filling

    • bwhip on January 15, 2019

Brought a batch of these to the office and they were a HUGE hit. Very much like the famous Girl Scout peanut butter sandwich cookies. Great texture and flavor - you can either have them a little chewy, or crispy, or both, depending on baking time. Filling was just a touch on the sweet side for my taste, but my coworkers thought they were one of their all-time favorites.

  • Black sesame brown sugar shortbread

    • puddlemere on January 29, 2018

Delicious and a nice variation on shortbread, although they didn't hold their shape as well as in the photo. I wonder if I should have refrigerated the cut cookies for a bit before baking.

    • skvalentine on September 19, 2022

Not too sweet and interesting, very good flavor. I cut them into shapes with a cookie cutter instead of following the shaping directions.

  • Lemon meringue cookies

    • skvalentine on November 08, 2021

These were pretty easy and very delicious, although extremely sweet. I loved the unexpected addition of graham cracker crumbs in the meringue.

  • Classic lemon bars

    • mdagl on January 21, 2023

      Tangy and sweet. So good!

  • Peanut butter cream pie

    • HalfSmoke on May 26, 2018

My daughter made this, so this note is about the eating, not the making. The peanut butter cream filling is perfect and fluffy. The candy and pretzel bits are a nice touch. A winner.

  • Strawberry-ginger crumb cobbler

    • mdagl on January 21, 2023

Used crystallized ginger instead of fresh because it’s what I had on hand. Still turned out great! Loved this one! Husband wasn’t too fond of the inclusion of ginger

  • Double the chocolate cake

    • Smokeydoke on March 12, 2018

Another winner from Joy the Baker. Perfect chocolate cake base. Frosting was, as she writes, "wonky" but it wasn't bad. There's a definite sour note to it from the sour cream. But it is a dream to spread. Photo included.

  • Chocolate-peanut butter pretzel layer cake

    • southerncooker on November 09, 2014

I made this one for my daughter's birthday and it was a hit. Delicious and beautiful.

  • Salted peanut butter buttercream frosting

    • southerncooker on November 08, 2018

This frosting is so good. I've made the pretzel cake from the cover of the book twice from this book with this frosting on it for daughter's birthdays and we all love it. I also made her a chocolate one year with this frosting, also delicious. This year she requested Christy Jordan's Peanut Butter cake with this frosting. Another hit.

  • Vegan chocolate frosting

    • SenseiHeidi on July 28, 2023

Very rich CHOCOLATE frosting on the order of ganache. I used 4 Tbsp almond milk, 1/2 Tablespoon coffee concentrate. 6 cups powdered sugar. Remember to cool the chocolate so it does not melt the margarine. This frosted an 8” two tiered cake, very thickly, with plenty left over.

  • Under-baked chocolate chip skillet cake

    • Fawndarellabakes on August 17, 2018

Not a fan of this one. Weird grainy texture like there is too much flour vs. sugar. I love my butter but this is too much butter, it leaves a coating on the tongue that isn't pleasant. Greasy. I cooked it 10 min longer then the recommended 18 min because it was so jiggly. The underbaked part seemed raw not underbaked.

    • mdagl on January 21, 2023

Didn’t have white sugar, doubled brown sugar instead. We enjoyed these!

  • Lavender-Earl Grey ice cream

    • mdagl on January 21, 2023

SO good! Added an extra tea bag.

  • Cookie no-dough ice cream

    • HalfSmoke on February 24, 2018

Good. Not as creamy as hoped.
