  • Port light

Meh. Dry shake is a key techniquie, but a pilsner glass is a no-go unless you want a cocktail that only fills 1/3 of the glass. Next time: Double strain into a rocks glass for a proper fill line while losing any eggy blobs and pulp.

  • Demerara dry float

    • RaucusBacchus on October 02, 2024

Great! Next time: Taste both (cocktail and op) before floating the overproof rum.

  • Jet pilot

  • Sidewinder's fang

    • RaucusBacchus on October 02, 2024

Great! Super tasty. The orange peel requires patience & practice. Next time: Make it a double!

  • Hawaiian sunset

    • anya_sf on September 14, 2024

Nice tropical-tasting drink made with vodka instead of the usual rum. I used standard orgeat and artisanal grenadine (not the book's recipes) and it wasn't too sweet.

    • peaceoutdesign on May 27, 2023

2 oz gin was much better otherwise it was a bit too sweet.

  • Jungle bird

    • RaucusBacchus on October 02, 2024

Great! I love this drink. Next time: Make it a double. Try subbing pineapple w/ grapefruit.

  • Golden gun

    • RaucusBacchus on October 02, 2024

Great. The grapefruit shines. Next time: try an Apricot Bitters.

    • peaceoutdesign on January 06, 2025

I was not impressed with this.

  • Center of the galaxy

    • RaucusBacchus on October 02, 2024

Delicious. Next time: figure out how to float a raspberry garnish.

  • Mary Pickford

    • anya_sf on July 04, 2024

Mt Gay Eclipse rum worked well. Rum and pineapple juice are a classic combination. I assumed a "barspoon" of grenadine was about a teaspoon. I don't think I measured 6 drops of Luxardo accurately (what is that, about 1/4 oz?), but the drink was very nice with the amount I added.

  • El presidente

    • Baxter850 on April 11, 2020

This is only good if you use Dolin dry vermouth.

  • Barbados rum punch

    • VeesVersion on May 08, 2023

Substituted Old Sam Demara Rum, 1:1 simple syrup; 8 drops Bittered Sling’s “Moondog” bitters ~ to make up for not using Demerara syrup. Delicious!! The glassware - stemmed Pilsner - was perfect.

  • Sidewinder's fang peel

    • RaucusBacchus on October 02, 2024

Requires patience & practice. Next time: try-try again.

  • Zombie

    • Baxter850 on April 22, 2020

Fairly close to Donn’s ‘34 specs with a touch more cinnamon syrup in place of white grapefruit.

  • Yuletidal wave

    • chris_vsggoh on February 09, 2026

Make this routinely for a Christmas party I would urge you to let it sit for a little bit while longer than the recipe calls for it to get it to little a little bit cause I’ll get your gas really drunk real quick ?

  • 2:1 simple syrup

    • RaucusBacchus on September 28, 2024

Easy "rich" simple. There is a reason "Simple" is in the name. So simple, there's no excuse for buying off the shelf syrup.

  • SC demerara syrup

    • RaucusBacchus on September 28, 2024

An excellent syrup with a complex edge over white sugar. The syrup requires extra care in the make to else tends to crystalize over time.

  • SC honey syrup

  • SC vanilla syrup

    • RaucusBacchus on September 28, 2024

Easy. Very good. Madagascar presents a darker result and a robust flavor. Tahitian provides a lighter syrup and a delicate flavor.

  • SC cinnamon syrup

    • RaucusBacchus on September 28, 2024

Correction: Ingredients call for stick cinnamon, not ground. It would be very hard to filter out the grit if using ground cinnamon. I have used cinnamon chips/chunks which work well enough, but stick cinnamon works best.

  • SC molasses syrup

    • RaucusBacchus on September 28, 2024

Easy. Molasses syrups is excellent in a Rattle Skull.

  • Li hing mui syrup

    • RaucusBacchus on September 28, 2024

Check the contents in the li hing mui powder. Many contain Aspartame and other weird adjuncts. Those oddities make for an overly sweet product. Finding the real deal li thing mui is worth the search resulting in a more complex and subtle syrup without the overt sweetness.

    • RaucusBacchus on September 28, 2024

Check the ingredient list on li hing mui powder. Many contain Aspartame and other weird adjuncts. Higher quality li hing mui powder is worth searching for, resulting in a more complex and subtle flavor profile that is not overtly sweet.
