Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Vegan banana chocolate-chip sheet pancakes [Nisha Vora]

    • hirsheys on March 06, 2021

Made a half recipe as written in a quarter sheet pan, though I used normal buttermilk, rather than souring almond milk. Went a little light on cinnamon, too, and used optional orange zest (yummy!) They were surprisingly fluffy and delicious - lots of bang for the buck. Would make these again, or just use this method for other pancake recipes.

Definitely making again as was so easy…no syrup needed as sweet enough as is. Subbed pumpkin for bananas/oat milk for almond

  • Turmeric latte [Andrew Chau and Bin Chen, The Boba Guys]

    • hirsheys on March 06, 2021

surprisingly yummy. Use less honey and fewer ice cubes (just because it didn’t fit in my glass with four cubes). Next time I’d just premix, then pour, rather than layer.

  • Crunchy ramen salad [BuzzFeed Tasty]

    • jennables on October 06, 2025

This came together nicely! I subbed the mangoes for canned mandarins and added some roasted tofu. I would definitely do this again.

  • Carrot snack cake with labneh frosting [Adeena Sussman]

    • Skamper on August 03, 2022

I made these as muffins to take to work, and they were a hit. I got 14 regular sized muffins from the batch, and baked them for 22 minutes. Using labneh in the frosting was genius - gave it a nice tang - and I will surely try this in other "cream cheese" frostings. I made a half batch of the frosting but only used about half a cup of sugar and it was still plenty sweet. The cake is not too sweet so the balance was good. Next time I might experiment with upping the tahini to have more of a pronounced taste, or maybe use some in the icing.

    • Skamper on April 05, 2026

Made just the icing this time. I had a scant cup of labneh and it was plenty sweet with one cup of powdered sugar. Love this!

Publishers Text

Restaurants nourish us. While they’re closed, we need to nourish them.

Beyond the basics of providing food and drink, restaurants fulfill a human need for connection. They’re a gathering place for family and friends, for first dates and breakups and birthdays and weddings. They’ve been there for us in good times and bad. Now it’s time for us to give back.

To help support America’s restaurant industry, Penguin Random House is publishing Family Meal: Recipes from Our Community, a digital-only collection featuring more than 40 recipes from our family of food and drink authors that you can’t find anywhere else. Readers will get an exclusive look at what these culinary masters are cooking at home right now—recipes that feed, sustain, and provide connection to the world outside. From Nanny Annie’s Sweet Noodle Kugel to Shrimp and Chorizo White Bean Stew to Chocolate Chip Olive Oil Cookies to Quarantine Wine Pairings, learn what Hugh Acheson, Dan Barber, Molly Baz, Bobby Flay, Edouardo Jordan, Kwame Onwuachi, Ruth Reichl, Danny Trejo, and many others are cooking for comfort. All proceeds from Family Meal will benefit the Restaurant Workers’ Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund, which supports on-the-ground efforts in the restaurant community during this challenging time.
