Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Champagne cocktail

    • tedwardws on March 09, 2025

Huge hit! Simple and elegant. Now what to do with a box of sugar cubes?!?

  • Chicken feed

    • Amycado on January 06, 2025

These came out surprisingly and overwhelmingly salty (basically inedible) when made as written. Its worth trying again but with unsalted butter and maybe substituting the Morton's Nature's Seasoning with a little garlic and onion powder, then salting to taste.

    • tedwardws on March 09, 2025

I was very skeptical of this recipe. The regular grocery stores do not carry Kraft Olde English or the Morton's Seasoning but Walmart does. Used a larger can of chicken. Everyone absolutely loved this! There were no leftovers. Perfect unfussy appetizer for a group. Made the mix the night before. Assembled an hour before. Popped in the oven as the first guests arrived. Will make again for parties.

  • Country ham and biscuits

    • tedwardws on March 09, 2025

The biscuits are wonderful! Fluffy and flaky. Made the day before and baked from frozen. Country ham is impossible to find in New England. I used black forest ham sliced thicker from the deli. Served with condiments like mustards, smoked apricot jam, mayo, and spring mix.

  • Pot of black-eyed peas

    • tedwardws on March 09, 2025

First time making black-eyed peas. Big hit with the family. Makes a ton. Sent lots home as leftovers and put a quart bag full in the freezer. Also have a bag of ham hocks in the freezer I need to use because you can't buy just one.

  • Turnip greens

    • tedwardws on March 09, 2025

Turnip greens were another ingredient impossible to source in New England. Used a big bag of mixed greens (mustard, collard, turnip) from Walmart.

  • Skillet cornbread

    • tedwardws on March 09, 2025

The only store that carries Martha White cornbread mix is Walmart. Giving this recipe 3 stars for two reasons. One, this meal didn't need cornbread since it has biscuits. Two, it's a mix that's doctored up a little and was just ok for cornbread. Dolly has a scratch cornbread recipe in March for St. Patrick's Day so why one with a mix? (Also, I'll be making soda bread instead of cornbread for March.)

  • Chocolate pie with meringue

    • tedwardws on March 09, 2025

This was a disaster. Made it twice. Pie filling liquified when in the oven to brown the meringue. Next time I'd just use the blow torch.

    • lauren_8zaumk on March 05, 2026

Definitely chill the pie before serving- SO good but bit soupy

  • Fried green tomatoes with ranch dressing

    • cassandhercookbooks on September 14, 2025

These were delicious! The breading was perfectly seasoned. For the dressing, I added an extra 1/4 tsp salt and an extra 1/2 tbsp dill. The tomatoes were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

  • Grilled chicken with zesty marinade

    • debbates on May 16, 2026

Everyone loved it, especially with a little drizzle of the drippings.

  • Classic spinach artichoke dip with fresh vegetables

    • mary_z01doa on May 02, 2026

Delicious! I absolutely love this recipe.
