Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Chicken stock

    • Pamsy on December 13, 2021

Used a Guinea fowl carcass. Cooked overnight on low for 14 hours. Lovely clear colour. No furious fast boiling and kitchen doesn't end up steamy. Good reward for little effort.

  • Smoked gammon & mixed bean chowder

    • etcjm on February 05, 2019

Yes it was easy and very frugal, but a number of things weren't quite right. The cloves over powered and it was just too watery. You could up the quantities of whatever soup/lentil/barley mix you use. Yes the ham was tender, yes it was great when I had a busy weekend, but when no-one wanted to eat it, day 3 I just couldn't face it for lunch and it ended up in the bin. I will try one more thing from this book, but two things haven't been great so far...

  • Gingered beef with bay

    • Crisrose on April 12, 2026

Our household set this as our cook book challenge for the week. Smells wonderful, looks shiny and luscious. A taste test says it’s rich, warm and delicious. Looking forward to tea time!

  • Spiced lamb tagine

    • Sheepyw on April 01, 2020

      Makes a lot - 6/8 portions

  • Warm beetroot & brown bean salad

    • Clog on May 27, 2020

While I prefer it with borlotti beans, this works well with canellini beans too - a little less firm and an earthier taste.

  • Sticky toffee apple pudding

    • Pamsy on October 05, 2025

Half the recipe filled 3 individual plastic pudding basins, cooked for 1 hour 45 mins in smaller slow cooker. Could probably fit 6 in large crockpot. So much easier than steaming puddings. Ate 2 and froze 1 as a test to see if I can make them in batches to freeze, so there's always a pudding available. Very good.

  • Rum and raisin spotted dick

    • Pamsy on November 13, 2019

Made half the recipe which filled 4 quarter pint plastic pudding basins. I only steeped the sultanas for about 2 hours and you couldn't taste the rum. Next time try to soak overnight and possibly increase the rum. Very nice, served with custard and almost as good the following evening after reheating in microwave. Between the slow cooker and the plastic basins and lids, steamed puds are now so easy! I think these could be successfully frozen.

  • Lemon sponge pudding

    • Pamsy on October 22, 2025

This was ok, halved the ingredients and used 3 individual pudding basins. Baked for 2 hours. Don't put too much water in pot, no more than half way up basin sides.

  • Coconut & lime rice pudding

    • Pamsy on March 22, 2020

This is good, although I'm not sure why you'd cook this in the slow cooker when it's just as easy to cook on the hob. See recipe for my additional ideas.
