This book has made a lot of major reviewers' "best" or "favorite" new cookbook lists! A wonderful compendium of traditional Mexican baked goods and desserts (yes, there's more to Mexican desserts than flan)!

I've made this recipe multiple times now. The last time I made it, I tried several different topping options and made a "sampler" for friends and family. I tried cooked apples with cinnamon, canned peaches, fresh berries, and frozen cherries (due to it being fall when I made this). The picture I uploaded is from this experiment. Overwhelmingly, the fresh berries and cooked apples won out. Cooked apples is an odd topping for this usually, but I think the fall flavor helped with the time period I made it. I've made it multiple times in two layers with fresh berries as the middle layer and on top. That's been very well received by everyone that's tried it. Make sure you have a dish to put under the cakes when you add the milks if you cook them in springform pans like I do. They have only leaked once, but just FYI if you have older pans :)

  • "Burnt" custard (Jericalla)

Really tasty and simple. The cook time is not enough, I'm going to do at least 45 next time.

This transporting book documents pastry chef Fany Gerson’s quest for the recipes of her homeland’s traditional dulces. It’s a deliciously well-researched journey through the sweet side of Mexico.
