Notes about this book

  • Maaseelulu on September 26, 2017

The split pea curry with lime-pickled cucumbers is a great meatless Monday dish. The peas give it a great flavor that really doesn't allow you to miss meat. I made this with green split peas since yellow were not available. Will definitely make it again.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Stir-fried broccoli with Sichuan peppercorns

    • Rinshin on February 01, 2020

Reduced the Sichuan peppercorns and that may have negatively affected the merit of this recipe. Other than Sichuan peppercorns, there was not much of distinct taste. The overall taste was very fresh tasting broccoli though and may go well with other more highly seasoned entrees. It did bother me that this recipe called for at least 4 small prepping containers. I plan to make this again increasing certain taste element.

  • Yakiudon

    • twoyolks on September 27, 2017

I'm usually skeptical of vegan recipes but this one really delivered. The noodles were flavorful and the vegetables were a nice compliment. I'd consider adding even more bok choi in the future as it cooked down considerably.

  • Pickled ginger

    • twoyolks on September 27, 2017

I used this shortly (about 30 minutes) after making the pickled ginger. It really brought out the spiciness and sharpness of the ginger.

  • Onion frittata with sherry vinegar sauce

    • anya_sf on October 22, 2017

My whole family enjoyed this. I used a mixture of gruyere and parmesan cheeses. The sherry vinegar sauce was rather harsh tasting on its own, but a nice complement to the frittata. The sauce is quite rich and we did not eat it all.

  • Sumac-spiced chicken (Musakhan)

    • HalfSmoke on January 07, 2018

      Delicious. Easy. Will make again.

    • anya_sf on May 24, 2022

We loved the flavors. I made 1/2 recipe, which took a little less time to cook. The pita got slightly crisp, making it easier to pick up (I assume it was supposed to be eaten that way?), but harder to cut. Next time I might serve the chicken over rice instead.

    • Shewi128 on May 20, 2024

I messed this up, so I can't give it my full rating. I halved everything in the recipe as I only had 1 lb of chicken, but then I forgot to half the water added. So, the flavor was very watered down. It might have been delicious, but it ended up being very muted due to my mistake. I might try it again, as I have most of the ingredients in my pantry.

  • Turkish meatballs (Kofte)

    • sarahawker on September 25, 2017

Super easy. Husband and kids loved this and want it in regular rotation. I halved the sauce and it was the perfect amount.

  • Lime-yogurt sauce

    • sarahawker on September 25, 2017

Delicious. Halved the recipe and had plenty. Did not have tahini so used hummus and it was great. Will try with Tahini when I try next.

  • Lime-pickled cucumbers

    • twoyolks on January 30, 2022

These were simply alright. The lime flavor was strong. I don't really think these are good enough to make again.

    • SharifromTexas on July 09, 2025

I thought this recipe was absolutely phenomenal. The lime juice and ginger make the salad feel tropical, bright and zesty, and the sugar tempers the acidity of the lime juice but doesn’t make the salad taste sweet. And the recipe is quick and easy to make with ingredients you probably already have on hand.

  • French apple cake

    • anya_sf on October 22, 2017

I sauteed the apples a couple of hours ahead and chilled them, which worked fine - just had to zap the butter a bit to liquify it before mixing into the batter. The butter got some very brown (almost burnt) bits and I wasn't sure if I should add them in or leave them in the bowl. I added them in and did not notice any off flavors in the cake. The cake was delicious and not overly sweet. We had it plain, but it would also be great with whipped cream or ice cream.

Rave reviews from friends but to me, it was too much like a pancake. Would have preferred more dough to make it more airy. Very nice taste, though. Precooking the apples was a nice idea and loved a not-too-sweet cake. Will make again.

Delicious… buttery and custardy. It was a big hit in our crowd.

  • Vietnamese coffee cake

    • Kinhawaii on February 22, 2023

Much better than expected- very moist cake. Used much less 5 spice, like a 1/4 of the amount & made 1/2 recipe in an 8 in. pan…mistakenly with half black cocoa until I realized I was spooning cocoa from the wrong bag. I also didn’t have whipped cream nor mascarpone so used creme fraiche which tasted fine- but next time a nice fluffy dollop would look better. But what I really loved was the simple sauce. I’m not a plain condensed milk fan but with the espresso- wow! I will use this for other cakes. Didn’t really need the milk in the sauce. Will definitely make this again.
