  • Venison meatballs

      I made a half batch of these (about 8 large meatballs) and they were absolutely delicious. I wasn't making the mustard sauce, so I braised them in chicken stock instead. They stayed moist and tender. One tweak I would make next time would be to use fresh garlic instead of garlic powder. I know garlic powder can be easier to incorporate into meatballs than fresh, but it just doesn't taste as good.

      This makes a huge amount of very good, rich crackers. I used a 1 1/2" round ravioli cutter, rolled the dough too thick, made 105 crackers, and still had a lot of leftover dough. Contrary to what the recipe header claims, these do not last. They go stale very easily, even in a sealed container overnight.

      Don't own the book but saw this recipe in the Boston Globe last week, in Susie Chang's review of the book. It was a huge hit -- made it the other night with an Asian stir-fry, for which it was the perfect accompanimen. Subbed green cabbage for napa (out at the market), and used Thai chile sauce I had in the fridge for sriracha. Super easy -- in fact, am making it again tonight by popular demand! May have to buy the book just on the strength of this recipe...

  • Mexican Co-Cola drumsticks

      This is okay even though my husband quite liked it, but then he likes anything drumstick. I did deviate from the cooking method. Instead of deep frying the drumsticks and then simmer them in the marinade diluted with chicken broth, I just baked by basting with the marinade several times during the process.
