Being able to add my own books esp for my Japanese language books and those earlier English language books without ISBN or current ones without ISBN.

Definitely needed - my collection has many volumes that precede ISBN's and Scandinavian books not carried by Amazon.

That feature is on our development to-do list. But our developer is very overloaded right now with EYBDigital so I cannot give you a date when that will happen.

All books being paginated would be great, although the task of doing that is probably rather daunting. (I've done a couple!)

I done it when I've found significant coding errors in the early books ... it really could be done quickly if 10% of the members agreed to do a book every other month.

Thank you for your understanding mjes. My Japanese languages books are purchased through amazon japan with ISBN but unfortunately Amazon US does not recognize them.

Would it be difficult to add a "wishlist" section (or some similar name) to members' bookshelves? Sometimes I see a cookbook that interests me and I want to remember it and possibly buy it later, so end up writing it down or something so I don't forget. A wishlist or "I'm interested in this book" tag might be interesting.

lils74 - a wishlist feature is on our development to-do list. I can't tell you when it will happen as our to-do list is very long but rest assured it will be done one day.

Thanks for your quick reply! I can only imagine how long these things take in practice, but it's something to look forward to - thank you!

I think you can add your own books to EYB - or at least your personal recipes.  Could EYB perhaps EYB expand the personal add your own recipes to allow adding recipes by books for those in one's own collections?  I certainly have some in my collection that do not have ISBN numbers (or only with the old ?9-digit ISBN numbers).  Also some of these old books aren't included on Amazon (which is the EYB benchmark) but are on ABE (Advanced Book Exchange).

Another wish/dream would be for the combination and weeding of indexing terms and ingredients to avoid/reduce the complexity of searching for recipes.  Often ingredients are listed in a plain American form, and again with an alternative foreign term.  e.g. Canned tomatoes; canned tomatoes/tinned tomatoes.  Or sweet potatoes; sweet potatoes/kumara.  I think you've said this is already on your "To Do" list but it would be great to move between them.  And naturally if there is any way that I can help in this regard ...

#13 Posted : Sunday, August 5, 2018 12:15:29 PM(UTC)

CharlotteBB - you can add any books to the EYB Library that are not already listed. This is explained in Help FAQs. You can add books using ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 numbers. You are correct that a book cannot be added if it does not have an ISBN. Though we will add the data manually if the member wants to index the book. We do intend at some point to add a feature that allows members to add their own book data, in which case an ISBN number will not be required.

When you say "reduce the complexity of searching for recipes" do you actually mean searching for ingredients when indexing? When looking for an ingredient to add, if you enter tinned tomatoes then it will appears at the top as canned tomatoes [tinned tomatoes]. And search for kumara it appears at the top as sweet potatoes [kumara]. I'm not clear why that is complex. And when searching your recipes on your Bookshelf those ingredients appear in the recipe ingredients list as tinned tomatoes and kumara so again it's not confusing. We don't intend to change this format as it is how we link ingredients so a search by one name also shows all recipes with the other name. If I misunderstood your question please do provide more information and I will address it again.

Would be nice to be able to search a Book for recipes by "Recipe Online" in the dropdown menu.  Currently it has Book Order, alphabet, Rating, and Buzz (whatever that is).  Having Recipe Online would allow adding to my Bookshelf a recipe or two that's on the internet from an interesting book I don't own.  Similar to the Book Previews you do now with new publications, but for older books we may, or may not, want to buy.

A related request would be to add to "My Rating" to the Book search and Recipe Sort By.  Instead of Rating by others - which is sometimes needed when deciding which recipe to try - My Rating is more often desired for my Bookshelf books and "I've Cooked This" recipes.  Too difficult to do by hovering over the stars for each and every recipe to see if the colored stars are mine.

(This is besides my true #1 wishlist item - the capability to sort search results by multiple bookmarks.  Just as we can use multiple Filter By categories defined by EYB, I'm sure many users of the database search will appreciate being able to use multiple custom bookmarks that are personalized for their own needs.  For me, typically it would be both "I've Cooked This" and another custom bookmark like, "my garden vegs" or "long prep time" or "make day-ahead".  I know it's been on EYB's development to-do list for a couple years.)

OK, sorry for squeezing in three in your #1 Thing I Would Like to See . . .

#15 Posted : Monday, August 6, 2018 6:30:53 PM(UTC)

Ed - you can view all the Library Online recipes in books by selecting those filters at top right.  The dropdown menu is Sort which is a way of changing the order in which the recipes are shown to you - filtering is how you select to see just selected recipes. There are 58,387 Library online recipes from cookbooks - it's like getting 340 free cookbooks.

You can also choose to view just the online recipes in one book by clicking the book title, then clicking "Search this book for recipes" on the recipes tab. Now you are in search for that book and you can filter what is there to just see Online Recipes and add each you like to your Bookshelf. One of the most popular books in the EYB Library is Plenty More by Yotam Ottolenghi and out of 156 recipes in this book, 140 have Online Recipe links because they were first published in the Guardian newspaper.

Both of your other two requests - sort by my rating and filter by multiple Bookmarks - are on our development to-do list. I know it seems things have been on the to-do list for years but we always have to prioritize which features will help the site to grow. And our big development project right now is EYBDigital, which will launch this week. We then hope to get more feature improvements done.

Thanks, Jane, for the three step method (click book title, then "Search this book for recipes", then filter for "Online").  Solves that problem for me.

Looking forward to the development improvements down the road.

I still haven't done all that much on this site with notes & bookmarks. And I see that it is impossible to add a bookmark to a title not in one's library already, but couldn't we use personal notes as a workaround for keeping track of books that we're contemplating aquiring?

#17 Posted : Tuesday, January 8, 2019 9:32:39 AM(UTC)
I just use the Amazon wishlist to keep track of cookbooks I think I want to buy. I don't always buy them from Amazon but since you can search it for cookbooks directly from EYB it is a snap to put them on your list. Then if you go back through and buy them starting through the EYB site they give EYB a bit of a commission. It seems like a win-win.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I'll probably just stick with the Amazon wishlist. Maybe I should start a separate wishlist there just for cookbooks. I see so many here that look intriguing, and my regular wishlist is filled with hundreds of items of all types from years ago, many no longer relevant. (Or else I could just clean out all of the old stuff. I usually only delete items when they've actually been discontinued.)

What makes you add a public note to a recipe? I'd really like to be able to filter books by "notes" or have some way of accessing searchable notes .. most notes are inspirational and useful.

I pretty much make a public note any time I cook a recipe that's indexed (I also keep notes in books I hope will be indexed/I might index someday, so I can add them later on.)

I figure it's worth noting if I enjoyed it or not, or what I might have changed/would suggest changing in the future, if it could be helpful to others. One of the things I find really frustrating is if I'm looking at a recipe and only see a low-star rating of it, but no explanation of what that person thought was wrong with it. Did they just not care for the flavor? Or think something was wrong with the recipe? I really want to know, so I can decide whether to attempt the recipe or not!
