Notes about this book

Note the valley continues down into the US with the spelling Okanogan. (Yes, I'm an Okanogan Jr-Sr High School graduate.) The number of cookbooks coming out of this rural area is amazing. See: (1) Menus from an Orchard Table: Celebrating the Food and Wine of the Okanagan by Heidi Noble (2) Out of the Orchard: Recipes for Fresh Fruit from the Sunny Okanagan by Julie Van Rosendaal - I believe this won some major Canadian awards (3) The Butcher, the Baker, the Wine & Cheese Maker: An Okanagan Cookbook by Jennifer Schell (4) The Butcher, the Baker, the Wine and Cheese Maker in the Okanagan by Jennifer Schell (5) In Season: A Harvest of Okanagan Recipes from Davison Orchards & Friends by Tamra Davison (6) Cookbook and Prose: Seasonal Selections to Celebrate 10 Years of Cookery Columns and Occasional Prose, from the South Okanagan Review. Just think "birthplace of Sally Jackson cheese".

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Peach, basil, and sour cream muffins

    • Frogcake on March 02, 2019

Great muffins! Never would have thought to pair fresh basil with peaches. And this works well with apples replacing peaches in my view. Might add some walnuts or pine nuts next time. I was tempted to add cinnamon (with the apple option) but the cinnamon would have competed with the basil. Definitely a repeat.

  • Turkey and nut burger

    • Frogcake on March 31, 2019

The peanut butter in this turkey burger totally works! Note to self that I used natural smooth PB. I didn’t have any gruyere so used manchego, which is not creamy but salty crumbly - this also worked well. Loved the burger on homemade buns with aioli, Dijon and pea sprouts. Definitely a keeper!

  • Oat-crusted Arctic char

    • Frogcake on March 30, 2019

Fantastic recipe! I used pacific salmon in place of Arctic char. Just added a large pinch of fleur de sel to the maple sauce and I used anchovy butter in place of regular butter. Definitely will repeat.

  • Lamb osso bucco with mashed red jacket potatoes

    • Frogcake on March 31, 2019

I have made this with both lamb and veal shanks. So delicious either way! I’ve also replaced white wine with dry sherry. Another great recipe in this book.... I will be making this again.

  • Okanagan fruit sangria

    • mjes on September 08, 2021

This sangria is built on the infusion of fruit into wine (lemon, lime, orange, apple, pear), the inclusion of a fruit nectar (peach, apricot, or pear) finished with brandy, ginger ale, and topped with candied blackberries. This is an exceptionally good sangria.

Publishers Text

The Okanagan Valley, 125 miles long and 12 miles wide, is home to some of B.C.’s most historic farmland, and every summer, the region explodes with apricots, peaches, sweet cherries, pears, plums, nectarines, grapes, and apples. There is no greater pleasure than seeing the reaction to true, honest cooking, and home cooks know this feeling, too. The Okanagan Table is a cookbook celebrating the local flavours: creating exceptional meals by connecting with the freshest, highest quality food. Featuring more than 80 illustrated recipes, the book is structured in the order in which we enjoy our meals: sunrise, midday, sunset, and twilight and showcases a collection of classic and signature recipes from Oat-Crusted Arctic Char and Root Vegetable Torte to Crab Cappuccino and Double Chocolate Mashed Potato Brioche. The recipes are simple and yet frequently decadent--and like most good things in life, they appear complex but are unabashedly straightforward. And finally, many of the recipes include pairings with the best wines and drinks in the region. This destination cookbook will have you singing the tunes of your favourite Okanagan memories.
